Wanted-Adirondack Mtns Weekend Trip Suggestions “I'm thinking of doing a 2 night backpack trip to the Adirondacks, October 17-19th. I've never bpd there and would greatly appreciate some suggestions as to where to go, special sights to see, etc., preferably in the high peaks region. Thanks” 11:07:51 AM 10/06/03 “Depends if you like peakbagging, or just awesome scenery. To go the scenery route, In from the LOJ an easy hiking 7miles to Indian Pass to see the views of Wallface an 800ft high cliff about a mile long, backtack about 1 mile and go up over the pass between Iriquois and Marshall down to L. Colden. Out through Avalanche Pass (a highlight of the High Peaks area) to Marcy dam and back to the LOJ. Best to spend night 1 at the intersection of the Indian Pass trail & Trail to Colden. Night 2 at the Avalanche lean-to.” 11:53:45 AM 10/06/03 Cascade and Porter Mtns. “Nice climbs with great views of the high peaks with a close road approach.” 12:19:02 PM 10/06/03 “If you end up staying at Lake Colden or Marcy Dam, be prepared to deal with bears. Lot's of great trips around the high peaks, but expect crowds on the weekends. Enough negativity, the 'Daks frickin' rock!!!! I've had a blast every trip I've gone there. The possibilites are endless for routes to choose in the High Peaks region. The place is magic.” 12:23:44 PM 10/06/03 “Be ready for cold weather. The snow has already fallen and stuck (only a couple inches at this point). The road up Whiteface has been closed possibly for the season. Also if you do go into the Marcy Dam, Lake Colden area, be careful with your food. The bears have figured out the cables and bears making their nightly rounds have damaged all but one of them. The suggestions so far have been good. You may also want to try the Dix Mountain. The area is as used and abused as Marcy Dam and Lake Colden. The trailhead is right off of route 73 just before you get to Chapel Pond. If you’re lucky the Boquet River Lean-to may be free but I wouldn’t count on it.” 12:39:46 PM 10/06/03 “One of my favourites is Algonquin. There is a camping spot about a third of the way up, on the left, not long before the falls. If you set up early, Wright Peak is a nice walk and both Algonquin and Iroquois are easily done the next day with a good walk back out to the car. It's beautiful around this time of year.” 2:49:55 PM 10/06/03 “Thanks folks!” 10:17:57 AM 10/07/03 “JO... For information on backpacking and/or dayhiking in the Daks, you gotta check out this guy's amazing website... Adirondack Journey I also highly recommend Barbara McMartin's "Discover the Adirondack High Peaks" book on the Eastern and Western High Peaks. It's filled with very useful information on many of the High Peaks trails. She's written a whole series of "Discover" books, so be sure you get the one I've mentioned here. You'll also need a good map... I recommend "Trails of the Adirondack High Peaks Region" from the Adirondack Mountain Club. If you buy their Guide Book #1 for the High Peaks Region, you'll get the map with it. Good luck. Maybe I'll see you there sometime.” 5:32:34 PM 10/07/03
