I read a trip report from a couple guys who did the whole thing in like a week on mountain bikes unsuported. They said there were places that were so tight they had to take their bikes apart to fit them through and the trail is very vague in ares.

As a general rule, the Sheltowee Trace is not maintained very well outside of the overused Gorge area. I hiked from the North terminus last year and had to go over or around countless numbers of downed trees. The disturbing part is that in one section the downed trees appeared to have been cut down.

Hi Jerbear!

2scoops - doubt there would be a lack of water, depending on when you plan to go. Lately Kentucky has had plenty of rain. As Jerbear said, it's an ok area. Don't depend on the map for trails, go by the topo. If you get over by the Osborne Br. or Clifty Creeks, there some good bushwacking exploring up those and other side creeks.

Clifty Wilderness Kentucky Camping
Hi. Anyone been here? Is it worth the trip from Chicago? I have backpacked River to River trail in the Shawnee Nat'l. Forest, and I am looking for something like that. Also, I like to camp within short hike of places to swim (skinny dip if private enough not to offend other hikers/campers) so I like remote areas near lakes and streams. Any suggestions?

Anyone want to join me? Planning to go late spring May or early june. I am 56 y/o married male with wife who thinks roughing it is a Holiday Inn without a swimming pool. So most of my backpacking is solo or with other guy friends. I have been camping with others from age 18 to 65 and got along fine with all. I am laid back, easy going and have a sense of humor.

THanks Stormbringer. I will try that when the time gets clsoer and I actually have a date planned. It was just sort of a toss in comment at this time. I am more interested in information about the best parts to see and where to set up camp at days end.

I don't know if I would swim in that water. The Red is not the most private park to hike in and I don't know if I would trust what is in that water. Maybe because I live to close, but clean water is not something you hear about around here.

Don't walk, RUN! Well OK drive!
The RRG area is one of the most awesome places I’ve ever hiked. There is something around every corner and over every hill. It’s just such a special place and well worth the drive from anywhere. Not too sure about the skinny dipping though. The place gets a lot of visitors. Crazy Mike and I are scheduled to go there in May so a small group thing might be cool as long as the trip doesn’t get dog piled and 20 people go.

clifty wilderness is fairly remote, gets much less visitors than the main section to the west. maybe when it gets late you can go skinny-dippin. explore the sheltowee north of the red, thats an even more remote section.

Is this other area as scenic as the gorge? Are there arches and stuff?

Nigal The trip in May sounds good. Keep me posted on that. Also, I think the Clifty Wilderness is a good possibilityu for late June or Mid-July. I think I will put that in my plans.

Anuyone know any good trail guides for wither RRG or Clifty?

Oh wait a tick, wasn't your May trip to Nordhouse Dunes? I'd be up for that in stead. Makes no real difference to me.
