Date: Up for debate, but I picked the last weekend in Jan for starters Where: Fierry Gizzard or Savage Gulf, TN. Which one is better? I've never been, so if any vets of this place want to go, we may shove some of the planning off on you.” 2:42:16 PM 10/13/03 “PS. this is on the trips page too.” 2:42:40 PM 10/13/03 “I am trying to set my schedule with the kids and it looks like last weekend in Jan will be a kids weekend. If that changes, I will probably look at this one.” 2:45:22 PM 10/13/03 “I wanted to do it the weekend before this, but I have a 2 day conference in scenic Opelika, AL” 2:50:52 PM 10/13/03 “LOL Scenic ? I'd like to do the Gizzard !” 2:54:04 PM 10/13/03 “No problem, dayhiker. I don't have the schedule firmed up for after the first anyway. I will be one of the last minute decision makers on this one.” 2:56:27 PM 10/13/03 “I'm not up on all of the Halloween handles. Who is MightyDangScarey?” 2:59:47 PM 10/13/03 sounds good to me... “I'f it is good timing...I'll be there.” 3:03:10 PM 10/13/03 “What's this, if it's good timing stuff. You've been the one pushing for this trip. Sheesh, some people. Seriously though, I know it's a good drive for you. I hope you can make it.” 3:04:09 PM 10/13/03 “I like Savage Gulf better but both are good.” 9:27:53 PM 10/13/03 dayhiker “I've been to the Gizzard... it's definately a nice hike, but from what the dude' says, I think Savage Gulf is the ticket!” 9:32:21 PM 10/13/03 “Savage Gulf has a lot more variety. The Gizzard is, well, the Gizzard. You can do the Dog Hole trail instead of the Gizzard through the Gorge, but that's about as much change as there is. I might be up for this.” 9:36:48 PM 10/13/03 “MLK Jr. Day weekend?” 9:37:39 PM 10/13/03 “I'd go.” 9:41:06 PM 10/13/03 That sounds fun! “Dayhiker, I was thinking of going there as a Winter bp trip anyhow. I might join you if it would be ok? We could go over to the Dutchmaid Bakery and in the words of Stikmon.... "eat like Elvis!". Its just more Winter time fuel for the trail, right? Padding for keeping warm! I've done it before in warm weather, but saw photos of it as a Winter hike in snow. Its beautiful! Speaking of Stikmon..... He said he was going to help me by teaching me to paddle a real live canoe. I'm gonna hold him to that. Narrows of the Harpeth stays open year round. LOL” 9:41:07 PM 10/13/03 “Narrows of the Harpath is about 2 1/2 hours away from Fiery Gizzard.” 9:47:47 PM 10/13/03 So sorry! “Walkdindude. I'll be sure to keep all the threads separate in the future. geez” 10:33:29 PM 10/13/03 danababy “good gawd woman! You must have never met walkin dude, other wise you have never posted the above thread. the man was just pointing out a fact. If the post came from me, you could have interperated it as the latter, but the dude has much more respect and poise, and was just trying to help. Please, no Jeeeeeez. Your breast size won't help you, only hinder you, if you attack one of the only true souls of TT.” 10:50:20 PM 10/13/03 I'm Sorry “I'm sad tonight and being snappy. Forgive me? and leave my breast size out of this. You have no idea whats going on with me now, but it ain't good. Cut a gal some slack?” 11:06:38 PM 10/13/03 “ok - love ya babe.” 11:08:25 PM 10/13/03 “seein as how i will be without permanent employment at this point (shaping up for AT front to back), im down for this trip.” 11:11:57 PM 10/13/03 “Both the Gizzard and Savage sound good to me. And count me in on the Narrows any time. I haven't been there is a couple of years. All are nearby me, and I was thinking of starting a trip myself, someone always beats me to it.” 11:15:33 PM 10/13/03 “Sounds like Savage Gulf is the way to go. I'll change the trip planner to reflect that. I'm not sure if this is MLK weekend or not. I don't get that Monday off, so it doesn't help me.” 6:56:10 AM 10/14/03 “danababy - of course you're welcome. Sign up on the trips page.” 7:41:49 AM 10/14/03 “I'm up for Savage Gulf. Say, Stone Door to Savage station via the Collins Gulf trail???” 8:06:02 AM 10/14/03 “What kind of scenery and mileage would this be? I literally know nothing about the area, but have heard it's great.” 8:40:29 AM 10/14/03 Waterfalls in Winter! “Yep! there are lots of them. I know.... I'm rabid about waterfalls. They do it for me!” 8:46:32 AM 10/14/03 “That would be about 25 miles and the best damned scenery in the park. If the creeks are full, the various falls will be spectacular. I hiked from Greeter Falls to Savage a couple of years ago just before Christmas. It had been raining solid for the previous week and the creeks had become rivers and all the falls were fantastic. It was absolutely beautiful.” 8:49:51 AM 10/14/03 “MLK weekend is the 17-19th.” 8:54:47 AM 10/14/03 “If it stays on the 30-1 I might be able to make this one. As it stands right now I'll be on Cumberland Island over MLK and Feb 6-8 is Ocala. So it's a tight time for me. In any event, majority rules.” 8:58:11 AM 10/14/03 mlk weekend... “is my vote, if it means anything. the following weekend, there is a chance I might be going to Vegas for a conference, and if that happens, I'm going to need a warm up for a Revenge of Death Valley hike...whoas me...looks like 04 is already starting to look like fun. How far apart is Savage Gulf from the Gizzard. If they are close, maybe we can do a Sat/Sun in SG and then go kick some Gizzard butt on Monday as a day hike. If I'm gonna travel that far, I'd like to get as much trail in as possible. Let the GAMES begin...whoo hoo!!!” 9:08:16 AM 10/14/03 “I had hoped I could put this trip 1 weekend earlier, but have a conflict. I didn't want to make it the weekend of Ocala since half the world is going to that one. I'll talk with the missus about dates to firm this up.” 9:09:18 AM 10/14/03 “Once the date is firmed up, I will try to adjust the calendar. I am a definate for the Ocala trip so planning this one could be tricky if it is the week before. In any event, plan for the majority.” 9:11:34 AM 10/14/03 “Which campsites, FG? Collins West and Stage Road?” 9:13:55 AM 10/14/03 “Yeah, bloodpusher, that's pretty much what I had in mind. Father Ghoul” 9:16:41 AM 10/14/03 “If the creeks are up, we should prolly do the Greeter loop before we start out so that we can take picures of the two falls and the old homestead there. Father Ghoul” 9:18:45 AM 10/14/03 “Sure, as long as we get someone to stay with the cars. Anybody know if they're still having the problems with the break-ins at the Greeter parking lot?” 9:24:46 AM 10/14/03 “I didn't mean we leave the cars overnight, just a short dayhike, maybe on Sunday. BTW, the mileage from Stone Door to Collins West is 7.8 miles, and from Collins West to Savage station is 13.2. If it's just going to be a weekender, We'd prolly camp at Collins West Sat. night then out to Savage on Sunday. Sorry dayhiker, didn't mean to stomp on your trip. I'm just excited at the prospect of doing this again. I'll butt out now...” 9:41:09 AM 10/14/03 good Ole Tracy City “Chop Shop Capitol of the U-nited States of America. LOL First thing anyone ever told me about that place. I was heading down to Foster Falls to climb/hike/camp. Guy says watch yer vehicle real close. Then my Dad gets to telling me all about Tracy City and Monteagle from back in the day. When they lived there. I can't remember it. I thought he was just telling a good tale... you know coloring it up a bit? Talked to a female U.S. Marshall about a year later. She laughed and said all the stories were exactly the fact. No embellishment and even remembered working some of the cases he mentioned. I was glad I didn't know it earlier! Great Lord thats a colorful place.” 9:44:45 AM 10/14/03 “Don't feel like you're butting in. I was hoping someone who is experienced with the area would step in and handle this. I was hoping that I could post the trip, get interest and get ideas flowing and then have someone familiar with the area make recommendations. That is exactly what has happened.” 9:46:46 AM 10/14/03 “Savage Gulf is a GREAT place to hike, dayhiker. In which part of 'Bama do you live???” 9:49:39 AM 10/14/03 “I'm about 2 hrs from you. I live in Pell City. Another good thing about this trip is that bit, you, and I have all been on here for several years and have yet to meet. I have met lots of folks in common with yall such as chili, the Opies, and MDS, but never the infamous FG and bit. Somehow I knew yall would be up for this one.” 9:55:46 AM 10/14/03 “The way the rangers were talking, I figured even leaving the car for a dayhike might be a problem. Of course, my truck was there for most of a day and didn't get broken into. I'd prefer a three-day trip for this mileage, personally...” 9:56:52 AM 10/14/03 “Me, infamous??? You make me blush...” 10:13:29 AM 10/14/03 hey bp... “you remember our trek there 2 years ago...you and I almost died on that last uphill...LOL...no deaths this time...I'm gonna kick some Gorge butt this time around...or maybe not.” 10:14:28 AM 10/14/03 “FG and I did that uphill the other way last January. Much easier that way. It is a buttkicker though. I thought the last climb on the Gizzard was easier. Yah I'm up for this. Hopefully the doc will have discovered whatever is wrong with me by then and I'll be fixed. Oh wait, I already got fixed.” 10:17:18 AM 10/14/03 “TMI, lol...” 10:24:12 AM 10/14/03 “stikmon..don't forget it almost killed me too...i went from leading with walkindude..to coming in after bitpusher just because that DAMN hill!! I'm watching this trip also...just depends on where i live next month” 10:59:22 AM 10/14/03 “Ya'll just pick a place and I'll be there. :O” 11:02:10 AM 10/14/03 “I'm in if work allows!” 11:06:57 AM 10/14/03 << back to Savage Gulf page
