Fierry Gizzard or Savage Gulf in Jan any one?

“I have never been to either one of these places. Stikmon keeps trying to get a trip together, so here goes.

Date: Up for debate, but I picked the last weekend in Jan for starters

Where: Fierry Gizzard or Savage Gulf, TN. Which one is better?

I've never been, so if any vets of this place want to go, we may shove some of the planning off on you.”

“I am trying to set my schedule with the kids and it looks like last weekend in Jan will be a kids weekend.

If that changes, I will probably look at this one.”

“I wanted to do it the weekend before this, but I have a 2 day conference in scenic Opelika, AL”

“I've been to the Gizzard... it's definately a nice hike, but from what the dude' says, I think Savage Gulf is the ticket!”

“Savage Gulf has a lot more variety. The Gizzard is, well, the Gizzard. You can do the Dog Hole trail instead of the Gizzard through the Gorge, but that's about as much change as there is.

“Dayhiker, I was thinking of going there as a Winter bp trip anyhow. I might join you if it would be ok? We could go over to the Dutchmaid Bakery and in the words of Stikmon.... "eat like Elvis!". Its just more Winter time fuel for the trail, right? Padding for keeping warm!
I've done it before in warm weather, but saw photos of it as a Winter hike in snow. Its beautiful! Speaking of Stikmon.....

“Both the Gizzard and Savage sound good to me. And count me in on the Narrows any time. I haven't been there is a couple of years. All are nearby me, and I was thinking of starting a trip myself, someone always beats me to it.”

“Sounds like Savage Gulf is the way to go. I'll change the trip planner to reflect that. I'm not sure if this is MLK weekend or not. I don't get that Monday off, so it doesn't help me.”

“What kind of scenery and mileage would this be? I literally know nothing about the area, but have heard it's great.”

“Yep! there are lots of them. I know.... I'm rabid about waterfalls. They do it for me!”

“That would be about 25 miles and the best damned scenery in the park. If the creeks are full, the various falls will be spectacular. I hiked from Greeter Falls to Savage a couple of years ago just before Christmas. It had been raining solid for the previous week and the creeks had become rivers and all the falls were fantastic. It was absolutely beautiful.”

“MLK weekend is the 17-19th.”

“If it stays on the 30-1 I might be able to make this one.

As it stands right now I'll be on Cumberland Island over MLK and Feb 6-8 is Ocala. So it's a tight time for me.

“is my vote, if it means anything. the following weekend, there is a chance I might be going to Vegas for a conference, and if that happens, I'm going to need a warm up for a Revenge of Death Valley hike...whoas me...looks like 04 is already starting to look like fun.

How far apart is Savage Gulf from the Gizzard. If they are close, maybe we can do a Sat/Sun in SG and then go kick some Gizzard butt on Monday as a day hike. If I'm gonna travel that far, I'd like to get as much trail in as possible.

“I had hoped I could put this trip 1 weekend earlier, but have a conflict. I didn't want to make it the weekend of Ocala since half the world is going to that one. I'll talk with the missus about dates to firm this up.”

“Once the date is firmed up, I will try to adjust the calendar.

I am a definate for the Ocala trip so planning this one could be tricky if it is the week before. In any event, plan for the majority.”

“Which campsites, FG? Collins West and Stage Road?”

“Yeah, bloodpusher, that's pretty much what I had in mind.

“Sure, as long as we get someone to stay with the cars. Anybody know if they're still having the problems with the break-ins at the Greeter parking lot?”

“I didn't mean we leave the cars overnight, just a short dayhike, maybe on Sunday.

BTW, the mileage from Stone Door to Collins West is 7.8 miles, and from Collins West to Savage station is 13.2. If it's just going to be a weekender, We'd prolly camp at Collins West Sat. night then out to Savage on Sunday.

First thing anyone ever told me about that place. I was heading down to Foster Falls to climb/hike/camp. Guy says watch yer vehicle real close. Then my Dad gets to telling me all about Tracy City and Monteagle from back in the day. When they lived there. I can't remember it. I thought he was just telling a good tale... you know coloring it up a bit?
Talked to a female U.S. Marshall about a year later. She laughed and said all the stories were exactly the fact. No embellishment and even remembered working some of the cases he mentioned. I was glad I didn't know it earlier!

I was hoping that I could post the trip, get interest and get ideas flowing and then have someone familiar with the area make recommendations. That is exactly what has happened.”

Another good thing about this trip is that bit, you, and I have all been on here for several years and have yet to meet. I have met lots of folks in common with yall such as chili, the Opies, and MDS, but never the infamous FG and bit. Somehow I knew yall would be up for this one.”

“The way the rangers were talking, I figured even leaving the car for a dayhike might be a problem. Of course, my truck was there for most of a day and didn't get broken into.

I'd prefer a three-day trip for this mileage, personally...”

“FG and I did that uphill the other way last January. Much easier that way. It is a buttkicker though. I thought the last climb on the Gizzard was easier.

Yah I'm up for this. Hopefully the doc will have discovered whatever is wrong with me by then and I'll be fixed.
