As someone who plays violin and piano, I have to say that I've always been impressed by the large vocal range that Mariah has. Not only can she sing in a very wide vocal range (those insanely high notes), she also sings those notes in tune. It's just too bad that some of the songs her producer chooses for her aren't very good. It's more about "marketing" these days... But as a singer, she really knows how to use her instrument (her voice) and does it quite well.

It's too bad that she has other issues (including an image issue). If she would dress more classy and less trashy, she would still be sexy without looking slutty.
Although, it's not her genre, It would be interesting to see how she well she could sing opera-- she definitely has the range...

One of my favorite songs by Mariah Carey is her version of the Christmas song, Oh Holy Night... She's made it very "gospel-y" and it's pretty amazing how she goes from an almost alto range to hit the high notes without any effort...”

“Mariah may not be likeable for various reasons, but she has what's called a 5 octave voice. She did have a meltdown, gain a ton of weight and still wear tiny clothes, but that doesn't take away from her singing ability.

She showed up on Regis Live one day a few years ago wearing a bathrobe. I think she said it was like a joke, because maybe she didn't know what to wear, but I think she had gained so much weight that nothing fit her.

I have her CD, I think it's just entitled #1 hits, and some of the songs can bring you to tears with the lyrics and her emotions when she sings. I'm not sure if she might have written some of the songs too.”

I stopped in a GA Welcome Center On I-65 this weekend and they had a life size cutout of a beautiful girl dressed in one of those old time Southern dresses.

“LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Concerned about politicizing her favorite charity, singer-actress Jessica Simpson on Wednesday turned down a invitation to meet with U.S. President George W. Bush, a snub that left Republicans dismayed.

The apparent final word that Simpson would be a no-show at a major Republican fund-raiser with Bush and congressional leaders on Thursday night came after a day of conflicting reports from her camp and organizers of the event.

The blond star of the film "The Dukes of Hazzard" still plans to visit Washington on Thursday to lobby members of Congress on behalf of Operation Smile, a non-profit venture offering free plastic surgery for disadvantaged children overseas with facial deformities.

People close to Simpson said she declined a request to appear that same evening at the gala fund-raiser of the National Republican Congressional Committee -- even after she was offered some private face time with Bush -- because Operation Smile is a non-partisan group.

"It just feels wrong," one Simpson insider told Reuters on Wednesday, adding that the actress keeps her political views private. "She would love to meet the president and talk about Operation Smile ... but she can't do it at a fund-raiser for the Republican Party."

NRCC spokesman Carl Forti said he was surprised at Simpson's position.

"It's never been a problem for Bono," he said, referring to the U2 rock star who has met regularly with political leaders of all stripes to promote various causes, including Third World debt relief. "I find it hard to believe she would pass up an opportunity to lobby the president on behalf of Operation Smile."

Although Simpson's publicists insisted she never had planned to attend the fund-raiser, Forti said the actress initially accepted the NRCC invitation when it was extended on Tuesday night, only to change her mind the next evening.

Forti said the Republican group had even arranged for Simpson to dine at one of the head tables with U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader John Boehner, an Ohio Republican. The NRCC hopes the $2,500-per-plate dinner event will raise $7.5 million for Republican candidates in the congressional midterm elections in November.

I think she was right not to appear at a fund raiser for her charity if she is looking for the charity to be non-partison. I also think her charity is a worthy cause. Some might diss it for being about appearances, but kids with major disfigurements often have a very hard time in life. I think her involvement in the charity and her thoughtful decision here go against her being vacuous.

The Republican spokesman seemed not to get it. Has Bono appeared at Republican fund raisers?
