On page 22 of the gear guide there's a thing about homemade gear and one submission was a trekking/fishing pole made by a guy named Greg "Strider" Hummel. Is this the Strider who hangs around here from time to time?

What punishment would a TTer recieve for actually submitting something to the mag?

The magazine would force you on a Best Gourmet Dinner with a View Expedition?

You could be a gear tester for the mag?

Seems the only time they actually use reader stuff is when you don't want them to. Like when they ripped off Town Dog's Titanium Chef idea.

I am giggling out loud over here from my cubicle. I'm getting funny looks from the other girls. oh well

I'm glad our monthly friend finally came. I was poppling so many Advils for the cramps. I'll enjoy the relief for another month.

I would go on the gourmet expedition as a taster - someone carries my gear, food, and cooks. Free trip, yes?

I scanned the gear guide on the trail this morning. I actually looked forward to it in years past. This issue really bit the big one.

The stupid tree charts really blow!

Speak of the devil...the Backpacker emails showed up today as well. Promptly deleted, of course. At least from my account.

a senior Editor for Backpacker magazine commented on another thread about the gear guide. Dang I wish he had read Nigal's rant...lol

It sounds like readers wanted a change so Backpacker told them what that change should be.

Too funny---
And... why the heck WOULD anyone buy $25 chopsticks, when lighter bamboo ones are available for FREE when frequenting many carryout places?!!!

because lighter bamboo chopsticks are not in...geesh pink get with it will ya

LOL.... Oh, I forgot. How many gallon bottles of foundation and makeup should I bring on my next backpacking trip? Perhaps I should get my nails done while on the trail as well....

As someone else mentioned, you can't kill an attacking Grizzly with plastic utensils. Bamboo wouldn't work either.

metal chopsticks give you a fighting chance.

how about a ball point pen?

If I ever get that close to a grizzly, I don't think scrounging in my backpack for chopsticks will help....

I can see pink now..please Mr Grizzley can you wait a second before you bite my head off. I have to dig out my metal chopsticks so I have a fighting chance against you.

Hey, how would I cancel my subscription? I signed up years ago for that, "we'll keep renewing your sheyat, if you send us some paper."

I don't remember the last time I sent them a check, but I sill receive the crap!

Ewker - that's like the old Bill Cosby skit about wearing clean underwear being pointless. If I see a griz running at me full speed, first I'm going to say it, then I'm going to do it.

I actually have the lexan wine glasses.... I bought them for picnics but have very much enjoyed bringing them backpacking.

Margarita tho? Is there a battery operated blender and cooler so we can blend frozen margaritas?

This is so frickin' funny. Since bp2go painted himself into a corner claiming that he pulled Ewker's post of Nigal's comments only for language, now he's got to eat crow and leave the edited version on. Bet he doesn't make that mistake again.

Think there'll be a staff meeting at Rodale over this one? LMAO
Ruby

I don't kow about the cooler, but there's a crank operated blender in Campmor, for blending various slushie type beverages with ice or snow.

I pick up the occasional issue if something strikes me and keep them. I got the issue regarding the rarely traversed trails of ynp that pissed buck off. And the issue with some decent trails in Shenendoah that I never tried.

Has this been discussed?
I posted this on yet another thread trying to bash the mag:

Re: The Backpacker reader (aka Target)

Age: 25-35
Income - a lot.

All else is irrelevent. Then again, they need to make the ones who pay the bills happy, no?

So this just occured to me: What are the ads from our favorite gear suppliers like? Are they targeting us? Are we the rich pretty people displayed?

I haven't paid attention but are there Hummer ads in the mag?

I haven't got fed up with the ads yet or the schilling for products disguised as reviews and such.

I did cancel my subscription to Outside because of that, that mag is one big gear company love fest.

That was hysterical Nigal.

I posted a link on backpacker:

"Here is an exquisitely funny and sometimes vulgar rant on Backpacker and the gear issue:

Right now it should be the first post, by February you might have to look back to January 25."
