“Staten Island Ferry Pilot Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter

The pilot in the Staten Island ferry accident that killed 11 commuters last October has pleaded guilty to eleven counts of manslaughter.
Assistant captain Richard Smith also pleaded guilty to lying to the US Coast Guard about his medical history before the fatal crash.


The ferry slammed into a concrete pier on Staten Island after it crossed New York Harbor from Manhattan on the afternoon of October 15th. The accident injured dozens of people and led to billions of dollars in civil claims.

Investigators said Gansas violated procedure by not being in the wheelhouse during docking, when Smith lost control of the vessel. Smith said after the crash that he had passed out at the controls.


Under a deal with prosecutors, Smith acknowledged that his misconduct and inattention to duty caused the deaths.

In addition to Smith, an indictment unsealed in Brooklyn, NY names Michael Gansas -- the ferry's captain -- and other ferry personnel as defendants, law enforcement sources said. A physician who treated Smith before the accident also faces charges, said a source.


The ferry ran into the maintenance pier several hundred yards from the St. George passenger terminal, tearing open a 250-foot-long gash extending eight feet into its hull.

The city ferry fleet shuttles about 70,000 people a day between Staten Island and Manhattan, a 5.2-mile trip that takes about 25 minutes.”

“Loose Chickens Cause Major Traffic Delays On The Goethals Bridge

(Staten Island-WABC, September 14, 2004) — A chicken chase shut down the Goethels Bridge into Staten Island this morning when a truck hauling chickens hit a sign -- letting some of the foul free.

Port Authority police scrambled to collect the chickens when they fled onto the Staten Island-bound lanes just before 6 a.m. The chickens were swooped up with nets -- but authorities had to close the bridge's inbound lanes for nearly an hour during the fiasco.

The residual effects created traffic backups at Interchange 13 of the New Jersey Turnpike and on Routes 1 and 9.

The driver of the truck, registered in New Jersey, was issued several summonses.

Meanwhile, around 7:30 a.m., traffic was moving regularly in both directions on the Goethals Bridge”
