Where should I go?
I'm looking to go backpacking this weekend and I want to get Peak Fall Foliage pictures.

Should I head up to World's End and The Loyalsock Trail or do a stretch on the AT?

I'd post on the trips page if I only knew where I was going!

Loyalsock.

I'm canoeing farther south myself this weekend for less than peak colors.

This week was peak color in my area, but the strong winds yesterday took a toll.

bobo-

due to heavy winds, the loyalsock foliage is now past peak. the streams are high though, nice for waterfalls.

I was hoping to head there this weekend for some day hikes and photos between W.O. and Ricketts Glen. No leaves ?

jmitch loves those waterfalls!

Maybe it's a trip to Rickett's Glen for Fall foliage AND waterfalls! Perhaps the trees in Rickett's Glen were more protected from the wind or perhaps the opposite, the wind came howling up those chasms and knocked down all the leafage!

I just can't decide....

there is still plenty of foliage, but some trees are picked clean.

We were at Rickett's Glen a week ago and they were barely started yet. So this weekend might be prime.

This past weekend, I was hiking in the Fingers Lake region in NY and the foliage was near peak but even so the colours were awesome. Also, when I was driving through PA enroute to NY....the report I got from the Rangers out of Wellsboro PA stated that foliage is slow this year....so if you're heading up in that area I would expect some decent colour this weekend but next week would probably be a better bet unless another nasty front passes through.

jmitch....not to "dis" you or anything...because afterall you're the man....the authority on it all....but you crack me up....coming on here with these "matter of factly reports"...now hear this....

Capn...i'm looking to do a trip next weekend in Michaux State Forest on the AT....you're welcome to join...

Sorry Jack O Loop, I'm not understanding you.

I specifically posted this thread to get info from those that live in the corridor between PA AT and World's End - Those people like jmitch, must hike, m_silver, yourself, and others.

I appreciate the information that was presented by all in this thread, thanks.

Hey BoBo - I'm up for something this weekend. I originally was thinking about doing a long solo, either on the AT south of Indiantown Gap or something in the Catskills.

But I could be talked into going to Rickett's Glen. I love the waterfalls there and if there is any color at all, I bet the photo ops would be great. It would be a day hike though. A car camp somewhere Sat night and something else on Sun?

Bruce Almighty - you've been reading my mind!
(although I don't need no photo pros hornin' in on my foliage!!!)

This is the plan I worked out on the drive home;

Meet at Rickett's Glen on Saturday AM and do the Falls Hike (7 miles). Head over to World's End and check out the Canyon Vista and/or High Knob.

Saturday night - camp at bobo's "super-secret campsite".

Sunday - pick a nice stretch of LT to dayhike.

Whaddya Think, Dawg ?!?

Bobo...

Fall colors are a little past peak here in northern PA, but still a lot left. I'd say go for it ...either World's End or Ricketts Glen ...should probably be about the same, depending on how windy it was in those places this past week ...but it seems like the high winds were widespread accross the state.

Most importantly, have a nice time.

...and oh yeah... Sparky can do only easy stuff, like the Pinchot Trail. He's no longer able to go on longer, steeper hikes. He's getting too old and has some physical maladies. I miss having him with me :-( Ricketts Glen might be too rigorous for his back and neck problems.

What the heck? Is that a name change or a Halloween name? DOM sounds more goulish than DOM.

Mister M - I hope to see you there tomorrow. I'm sorry the Sparkster can't do the hard hikes anymore. That has to be tough.

Dare - I don't think I have any new gear to show off, but my old monster tripod will be slung over my shoulders. I wish your better half could make it.

See yas tomorrow!
