Alaska Backcountry trails “I am looking for backcountry trails around Anchorage, Denali or the Kenai to explore with my 10-year old son. Weather is not really a factor, but the less vertical the better. So far I have Crow Pass, Eagle River trail and Ship creek. If anyone has any ideas, thoughts, suggestions they'd be greatly appreciated.” 6:53:07 PM 10/16/03 “i know denali doesnt have much in the way of trails. just open-country trekking. and bears the size of houses.” 6:57:06 PM 10/16/03 “Harding Ice Field, near Seward, just a dayhike to an incredible view. Resurrection River is less vertical than the icefield.” 9:25:33 PM 10/16/03 “Down in the Kenai area, try the Russian River Trails on the south side of the Kenai River or the Resurrection Pass Trail system, on the north side of the river. These are in the Cooper Landing Area. Great views, lots of wildlife.” 11:32:21 PM 10/16/03 Resurrection Pass “Ditto!” 8:39:28 AM 10/17/03 “Look at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. They have a great canoe trail system. You can hook up with an outfitter in Soldotna or Sterling to drop you off at the trail head and pick you up. Portages are flat and relatively easy.” 10:46:35 AM 10/17/03 “A friend of mine hiked Crow Pass and he absolutely loved it. It wasn't as challenging as Denali (so that may be better for your 10 year old), which he also hiked, but he said it was just as beautiful.” 11:03:11 AM 10/17/03
