6:32:08 PM 10/17/03 “So thats where i left my body. Its been real tough with out it.” 7:07:10 PM 10/17/03 “God, I knew they would not find him alive. I still was hopen though. That is terrible. I don't understand how they could not find him for that long if he only was a little over 2 miles away. I guess I have no idea how such searches really work. That is so sad. Poor little guy, poor parents.” 7:07:59 PM 10/17/03 “The body is scheduled for an autopsy. I'd like to see a review of how the search was conducted. I heard there were some pretty good sar teams up there. The local news would interview his father, during the search. His tear streaked face could barely give a 10 second news bite.” 7:15:05 PM 10/17/03 “:-(” 7:25:43 PM 10/17/03 “I just watched interviews with the parents this morning on Good Morning America. Usually I HATE those lame interviews with a parent or loved one when something like this happens... all the dumb "how do you feel" dumba$$ questions they ask are almost dehumanizing ... how the he!! dou THINK they feel, jerk?? Anyway, these parents really seemed like kind, decent, salt-of-the-earth types, my heart goes out to them. Like Elfscream I'm very curious... with all the people involved, and him being found so close, I wonder what happened that it took so long to find him?” 7:32:59 PM 10/17/03 “maybe he was done before they started searching? May he find peace where ever he went.” 8:08:48 PM 10/17/03 “sad sad sad...” 10:47:12 PM 10/17/03 “Hey, just for a little perspective. If he was 2 miles away when they found him, that means that they had to search a 4 square mile area. They start at the house and fan out. That is a huge area, I mean huge. And it was in the Whites. That means they have to look all around every tree and rock big enough to hide his body. How many of you have looked for your dog that will generally come when you call it because you feed it, and he instinctivley knows the way home. A scared boy, in an area as rugged as the whites, night fall, all those trees and boulders.... It's all so sad really....” 5:00:44 AM 10/18/03 Boston Globe Report “Patrick Mc Carthy went missing at 1pm,Monday. His body was found Friday. The opposite side of the White Mtn. map shows the section of the Kangamangus.Patrick followed the Clear Brook creek past his parents place. His body was found several hundred feet past the creek at an atltitude of 2,500'.Maybe at the saddle between Big Coolidge and Whaleback Mtns. The Waterville Valley search team didn't find him until they allmost stepped on his body in a dense section of pine trees.” 7:47:55 AM 10/18/03 “That's such a bummer. It's impressive that so many people went looking for him and so sad that this was the result. Evidently, he was 2 1/4 miles away from where he was last seen and had gone uphill. I imagine people put more energy into going downhill than uphill. Also, remembring high school geometry - pi X the radius squared means almost 16 square miles would have to be searched to get everything within 2 1/4 miles. That's a lot of turf to cover as your search expands outwards.” 4:44:14 PM 10/18/03 “Lost kids are always the toughtest. I have seen more grown men, my self included, cry like babys when the child was found dead. wanderer...we use to do training where we would put brightly colored 1 gal milk containers in a wooded area, we would then have teams go through and see how many they could find and then ask them what they thought their probable detection was (percentage of area they thought they covered) Most teams were lucky to find 30% and most teams thought they had covered the area with 75% probable detection. In one night search, I found the guy only because I crawled under a log and actually crawled on top of him...scared the hell out of both of us. Years ago, on one of my first searches, we learned the hard way that little kids go uphill...we responded to a mutual aid search in another county, we searched all night for a little 6 year old boy. He was found on a ridge looking down at his own house, he died from hypothermia. I remember when we were questing the parents, one of the deputies asked if there would be any reason that the child might not respond to us, the mother suddenly looked pained and turned away...when we pressed her, she said that the father always told the boy that if he was bad the cops would come and take him away. He was spotted by the CHP chopper the next morning.” 5:09:14 PM 10/18/03 “Hmm, after reading the articles I had a good talk with my kids. I hope if they will ever get lost they will have the tools and the knowledge to do the right thing. I did teach my kids from the beginning not to be scared of cops, they are here to help, because I knew how I felt when I was little. My parents used to do the same "if you're bad the police will take you..." bla bla bla.. stuff like that. I fell once and busted my head pretty bad, never told my parents because I was scared i would get my butt wipped. Kids think it strange kind of ways...” 5:15:42 PM 10/18/03 Indian Curse? “Last thursday a 39 yr.old man jumped into the Pemigewassit River to save his dog. The dog made it, the mans' body hasn't been found yet. This happened 1 mile from the search hq.” 8:10:11 AM 10/19/03 Thanks mtnsteve “Thanks for the info & the things to think about. As a parent, I welcome this kind of information.” 8:27:57 AM 10/20/03 “Ditto, Mtn Steve. As parent AND Scoutmaster, I also welcome any info I can learn from. Sad and disturbing about that poor kid and his family. My heart goes out to them.” 8:35:13 AM 10/20/03
