Gotta Get a Warmer Sleeping Bag
For Winter Trips! I learned that from this past weekend out. Good lord. First night I was fine. Second night I got cold and was miserable. My tootsies and other stuff was chilly. I hardly slept. I got a blanket and bundled up in that along with the sleeping bag and it was better. Can't count on a buddy having a blanket next time. For the Savage Gulf trip and others... I'm gonna have to get a warmer bag. suggestions for keeping warm?

What have you got now?

If you're looking for a good 20F down bag, you might want to consider The Blue Igloo by The North Face. Made especially for women.

Ummmm, not to get too personal but did you get out of your clothes and into fresh (dry) sox and undies and such? Did you have a hat on? What color and cut were your panties?

Marmot 30 bag
looks like a surfboard or something
I want something light weight, really really warm. reckon I'd be better off with a 0 degree rated bag? Just for good measure? I am usually not too cold natured, but this past weekend ruirnt me. I don't like to be on the hard, cold ground. It makes me feel MEAN! lol

I think Marrmot has a new bag they are advertising in the latest BACKPACKER Magazine.

Something like a 0 rating and only weighs like 2lbs-8ozs.

Well, you could go with a 0F bag...but if you want light too, you're talking some cash.

Western Mountaineering Puma 0°F 5ft 6in

Pricey though...

I use a fleece sleeping bag liner. It is warm and it is soft.

My neighbour picked up a Marmot -30c bag and gives it rave reviews.

So, when I spotted a Marmot Maverick -9c synth bag for $100 cdn I grabbed it ! Good value there

Well, it's a little heavy, and it won't pack very small. Did you see the stuff size? 11x21...that's almost 2000c.i. right there...

Here's some suggestions for you DB.

Drink warm (non-alcoholic) fluids before retiring.

Get your body warmed up before getting in your sleeping bag - jumping jacks (hmmm, maybe not jumpin jacks in your case...), exercise, go for a short walk, collect wood - something to get the blood circulating.

Eat some foods with carbos (trail mix or something).

Definitely wear a hat and gloves to bed. Something like a full face mask or balaclava helps to keep the heat in.

If you are wearing layers of clothes (socks, multiple shirts..) make sure the layers are not too constricting, that will make you feel cold too, because blood won't get into those areas to help keep you warm.

Take a picture of me with you to bed. Using your headlamp, stare at the picture and keep saying, "ehww Capn, you are Soo hot, you are like a burnin' ember of love".

- just a coule suggestions fer ya!

Did you do the usual tricks - good hot meal before sleep with some long burning fats (olive oil is esp. good), hot water bottle (Nalgene) in bag, exercise just before getting into bag, voiding as soon as you need to go, etc. ?

As for a bag - I would recommend a good quality down bag and since it sounds like you had trouble with the 30 deg bag I would probably go to a 0 deg bag. Western Mountaineering bags have a good rep. although I don't use one myself.

Thanks!
For the ideas. Bobo...... gawd. Long as you live, John Belushi will never be gone. You just make me weak. You do. How is it that someone can simultaneously piss me off and make me weak in the knees?
It is beyond my comprehension. I'm not well.

Back to the jumping jacks.... no to black eyes. LMAO
I did eat, sit by the fire and go for a brisky walk to stir my circulation up before bed, slept in flannel jammie pants, fleece top, don't worry about my undies thanks, no alcohol, etc
I will say i see something that coulda been a problem here. I was probably dehydrated. Didn't drink enough fluids. Did the first day, not the second. Thusly... cold at night? it was misery.
I like the idea of a 0 Degree bag. I like the looks of the one Maple posted. Its a good looking bag, but the size makes me wonder. I can check around some and compare. I like Marmot, dont' get me wrong, but when more than my hiney is cold... somethings gotta give.

even with my 0 degree sleeping bag, i find it even more comfy with a fleese blanket. I even put one on my mat when i sleep. adds even more warmth. I was thinking of getting this bag for Treebeard.

let me know what you decide 0n DB ok?

Dana............
go to E-Bay and put in sleeping bag. You will be AMAZED at what is there. I got a High Peak 20 degree bag there last year and love it. It weighs 3 pounds. Has about 20 nights in it and it's about to get its 2nd washing. I think I paid about $80.00 for it and a fleece liner for another $15.00.

All good advice, DB. For my money, and yours, the most practical solution might be a fleece liner or an el Cheapo overbag from Campmor (www.campmor.com), they are surprisingly effective and you can put the works in a compression sack. It's perhaps not the ideal solution, but it works and at a reasonable cost.

Geez, danababy you make me weak to!!!

Right away I was thinking that you might have been colder on the second night because you were hiking all day and worked up a sweat?
Yup, If you don't keep hydrated during a long day of hiking you'll surely throw off your internal thermostat. If this is the case, warm fluids and electrolyte replacement (Gatorade) might help you out alot. You gotta have the fire burning inside you first...

Now back to this "pissing you off thang". You still sore about that coconut-shell bikini post? Awww, cmon, I was just funnin! I think You'd be a swell Island-Momma!!!!

Also... You might try keeping a pair of down booties just for sleeping in when the temperature drops. I've found that as long as my feet are toasty I'm in good shape.

My first trip was the TC2 last year. Freezing cold, at least for me. I was so cold, and that with 3 (!!!) sleeping bags.

I found out that if you are hydrated, had something warm to drink or eat, change into clean dry clothing, wear gloves and a hat you will be warmer.

What were the temperatures there?

Hi Gemini and all
I thought about you while I was shivering on Friday night. I said "poor thing, now I know how she felt!" anyhow... not sure on the temps. I don't think it got down below 30. I think I just need to smarten up and toughen up. I will take the suggestions for the hydration, eating, and I'll also try the hotwater bottle.
I slept with a darn fleecy jacket wrapped up around my little nose and face to keep me warmer. Night three I was in better shape. Had an extra fleece blankie to wrap up in. That had me sweating bullets and coming out of it during the night. So maybe I can find a compromise between all this?!
I hate even think of January without the heavier sleeping bag. I do have a hat and mittens that would help as suggested. Stikmonster.... come on over to your what? Sounds like a risky suggestion to this gal.
Fatherghoul is riiiight on. LOL
Bobo, I don't hate you. Just yanking your chain, hon. Its ok. You're cool. I don't even care about the Island Momma bit. You're a mess. I have accepted it. Just like some of the dudes I went to highschool with. They make life interesting. LOL

I've been told that if your right
handed you get a bag with a left
zipper. Rt-handed,I prefer a bag
with a right zipper. Anybody hear
this before?

I dunn know. I am left handed, but I actually don't care. I really don't know on what side my zipper is. I think it's on the right side though. I do know that it was on the left on my old bag. Does't make a difference to me.

I think it only matters in regard to what side your tent or bivy zipper is on, if that makes any sense!

As far as zipper side goes, make sure you and your honey have zippers on opposite sides so they can be zipped together.
