Photos: Lone Pine Peak and the 12,200' ridge overlooking the Whitney Trail

Saturday: I met Calhiker, Steve and Rick for a backpack up the Meysan Lakes Trail (7,900') to Grass Lake (10,900'). We left at 8:35, and were at Grass Lake by 12:15, which included a 15-20 min break. After setting up camp, we dayhiked to a 12,200' ridge overlooking the main Whitney Trail. Later that evening, we watched 5 flashlights slowly making their way down the chute from Lone Pine Peak. They passed by our camp around 9pm and still had to go to the trailhead. Temps were 49, with high winds. I had visions of my tent blowing away with me in it.

Sunday: Rick packed up and left due to committments in Redondo Beach later that evening. Calhiker, Steve and I headed for Lone Pine Peak (12,946'), up the scree trail that was easier than it looked. We took a 30 min break at the top of the chute, then headed for the peak, which was 2 false summits away. We were at the summit in less than 3 hrs, with blue skies and clear views all around. We could see a lot of 14ers around us: Mt Langley, Mt Whitney, Mt Russell, Mt Tyndall, Mt Williamson, Mt Sill and the Palisades, White Mountain and as far away as Charlston Peak in NV, Telescope Peak to the east, and at least 5 mountain ranges to the east. Two others arrived and shared the summit views with us. We never found the register. Coming down was fun, 1-1/2 hrs of scree skiing and trying to stay on our feet. The guys took their boots off after and I missed the photo of the sand pouring out of the boots. We packed up and hiked out in 1-1/2 hrs. The guys have a long gait, so I was jogging to keep up. Another fun weekend in the Sierra!

Awesome!
Great sky shots and Whitney shots.

You need to find some shorter hiking partners!!!

Was up on Lone Pine Peak four years ago and there was a register at that time (two interlocked tin cans). Thats one of my favorite areas for peakbagging - so many options in peaks and routes, from scree slogs to rock climbs (Mt Irvine's North face).

Buck, I'll be out again for a few more weekends.

Tango, you can stitch too with your S45. On the dial, there's 2 rectangles. Use that setting. Take your photos, download to your computer and go into your Zoombrowser and tell it to stitch it. I'll learn all the functions on this camera sooner or later!
