Twig- I'm glad we added propane direct vent heaters this year. No more spending days hauling and stacking 6 cords of wood to keep the house warm for the winter months. No more wood debris all over the place. No more fine coating of that oily, black dust all over everything. No more getting up at 3 or 4 AM to feed the fire. No more worrying about leaving a roaring fire going in the woodstove when leaving the house. We've still got 2 cords of wood that we'll burn this winter with the wood stove doors open and the screen in place to enjoy a fire.

Nigh 80 in SE MN yesterday, and today looks promising, too.

I'm actually kinda looking forward to my first snow encounter... which'll prolly be while I'm in the Northern Rockies.

Whoa! Fox News just did a snippit about the lack'o snow in C-O! What timing...
They mentioned that the peeps are making the best of it by hiking, etc, as opposed to skiing.

So, ski - did the steps hold up under the weight of the snow?

Violin- it was around 35 when I left the house this morning. Weird, huh? Temp is dropping and should get up to a whopping 42 today. Tonight and tomorrow morning we should see lots more snow.

snafu- Pelham, NH is down by Nashua, about 100 miles SSE of where I live.

gojo- lol. It wasn't snowing when I left the house, just drizzle. Really strange since I come down nearly 1,000 feet in elevation to get to work. It was snowing at work. We'll see how the steps handle four feet of snow this winter. It was not uncommon for me to have to shovel that much off the deck at a time last winter.

Now, do you think you could come back and build a winch and hoist so I could get the snowblower up on the deck this winter?

ski, I really enjoy playing with the woodpile - throwing it in the cellar and stacking it and the satisfied and tired way I feel after. Plus I love the smell of cut wood and the cozy warmth the wood stove provides. I'm just working against a deadline this year.

My stove goes all night and then again all day, so I don't worry about it. I used to live in a farmhouse where we had to get up to load the stoves - also cut all the wood ourselves - from the tree in the woods to the stove.

It's 42 degrees here.
I love winter!

I like playing with the woodpile, if I don't have to do it. Heck, just this summer I unstacked a cord and a half so I could put pallets down underneath the pile. It was almost fun to restack. Well, at least it was good, honest hard work.

O, Ye Great and Generous Snow Gods,
Do not listen to Paddles nor to his tribe. Grace us with your white wealth so that we can continue to play outside with our new, Christmas present headlamps. I need you especially as I'm getting the squeeze sexy new snowshoes for Christmas.

I am willing to sacrifice to you a person from Ontario (NOW I've done it - hey, this is my troll name, anyway).

I had all sorts of rude innuedno typed out to Bunny Boiler this morning. . ...I ht enter . . but it doesn't seem to have stuck.

I still love the combination of these lines:

"but we're supposed to get some tonight, yay!

I wish I had all my wood in."

Coupled with these:

I really enjoy playing with the wood . . . - throwing it in. . . stacking it and the satisfied and tired way I feel after. Plus I love the smell of. . .wood and the cozy warmth the wood . . .provides"

I had to . .I couldn't resist (forgive me bunny????!!!!)

But I gotta say . . .Bunny does have an awful lot going on with the whole sensory sensation of the wood phenomena!!!

Almost to the day.. the first snow of last year. I never thought we'd be first in NH. They're predicticting 1-3" where I am tonight and again tomorrow and 2-4" tonight and again tomorrow about 40 mile north. It will be interesting to see if any of it even sticks. It's supposed to get cold tonight, it's been snowing all day, so who knows?

I agree with paddles. Only, I think I need to move farther South, yet. See MN and ND are about the same as Northern Michigan, which is where I am. It's tooooo early. We had snow the last couple days in September. I went into major depression. I even quit my job. I'm better now that we had an Indian Summer. I told my boss I wasn't leaving. I'll probably kick my self late January. LOL

Playing in the snow is fun but having to push all that snow with a scoop so I can get to work isn't. I need a fourwheeler with a plow. Then I'd be happy.

Hey, skibaby, wanna loan me some money?

gimmee a shovel any day...
I dunno, having a plow guy sucks...they want money for the whole winter up front, they don't show up until 1pm OR if they do show up before you go to work, it's when you're in the shower, and then they plow the grass and everything...

Although having my own big rig with plow would be fun!

shoveling snow builds upper body strength, and improves cardio vascular flow, not to mention the endorphine rush!

I know I only lived up north for six years (well, nine really, but three of those were when I was a wee young lad), but I never really minded shoveling snow that much. Granted, I lived in the NY metro area, and it didn't snow as much as other parts of the country. But still, everyone always b--tched and moaned about shoveling and what not. I found it kind of peaceful and good exercise to wake up early and dig out my car, even during the heavier storms. Overall, I actually kinda liked it. The only thing I didn't like about the snow was dealing with idiotic drivers, and since NY/NJ is very congested and the population is very dense, there were plenty of them. I'll take snow and frostbite over the hot sun and skin cancer any day.

"I'll take snow and frostbite over the hot sun and skin cancer any day."

Me too Artex. The plow guy that I got rid of 14 years ago told me I'd soon be sick of shovelling, but I'm not.
My grandkids each have their own snow shovel here and they love to go out and "help."

secret confession
Bunny . .just between us . .

I have a secret passion for splitting wood.

It is a great physical release. Wham, wham wham. I have been very frustrated this fall becuase I haven't had the opportunity to split as much as I would have liked.

I have some left from last year, and have slpit enough to get me through . . but I would like to do more.

The wood supply i have is boogered though. It is all hard wood, but really gnarly. None of it seems to split cleanly. It takes a few whacks to get it shattered across the top . . but then has lots of cross grain and stringy "tendons" that don't allow it to pop apart. Each piece is a struggle, often wth wedges and a sledge hammer.

I do love it though!!!
