You're in luck, Maple!
They sell them at the Mexican shop in Saranac Lake and also, I believe, in Lake Placid. You can get one when you come to the Dacks.

Not I, but my bro suggested I get one for smoking outside in the wintertime. Not sure if I'm up to building a fire outside everytime I want a cigar though.

I saw them at Home Depot over the weekend too! Also fire rings. Mostly on sale too since outdoor season is "over".

A friend of mine has a chiminea and it is noce for atmosphere but it doesn't do much for heat. I think one of the fire pans would work better.

Me I just dug a hole on the backyard and put a ring of rocks around it. Works fine for me but then I don't have any neighbors to worry about.

Don't use it on a wooden deck/porch! In my building grills, etc. were recently banned from porches, by the insurance company. --BUGGERS! Our grill was a table-top gas grill.

Once I did have a smokey joe on a deck at another place. Was grilling in the winter, snow on the deck. When Spring rolled around, there were charred spots below the grill. DUHH!

Just goes to show that it depends where you put it!

There is a store over here in CT that sells them. They have hundreds of them out in the parking lot.

One nice thing about them is the smoke goes out the top so you don't have to do the chair shuffle everytime the wind shifts a little.

Madriver has this steel, moveable firepit kind of thing on 3 legs that I like also. It can take larger pieces of wood so you don't have to keep feeding it. But that might be the kind of thing the neighbors wouldn't like.

I'm sure my neighbors would complain about either one.

I've heard rumors of those 'clay' ones breaking real easy. I think it had to do with water getting into the pourous material. And that they don't like the cold temps to well either.

I'm thinking about getting a metal one for the backyard myself.

those chimineas don't put off much heat. I got a portable off the ground fire pit from home depot. I don't care about the neighbors :0!

I never thought about using it really in the winter when its cold. more for this time of the year. Fall

I have a patio and thats where i would put it. i just thought it would be cool to have on my patio sitting around it and having a couple of drinks.

Why don't you stick to the tried and true "NYC chiminea"?

I have a chimnea.

Do not use hardwood logs. Get the chimnea logs or you will wind up shattering the bottom.

Also, it helps to put a couple inches of sand in the bottom. Clean up is easier.

mapleleaf, if you leave it outside during the winter and water gets into the porous material, it will break if it freezes again. I made the mistake of leaving several large clay pots outside last winter.

It will piss the neighbors off, especially in town.

Mine has one and my bedroom windows are directly downwind...AND...he's usually getting it fired up around midnight.

Now, if he would throw his barking dogs in there...

I have a chiminea for my wife of 30 years. She loves campfires. The clay chiminea's crack in NYS's cold weather, so I got a metal one for her 14'x 24' concrete patio.(which I may extend) The boss wanted the deck on the ground & forbid me to cover or otherwise enclose it. I have a outlets, light & exterior light switch adjacent to the umbrella table & have telephone & TV cable jacks in a weather proof box also. We do have an enclosed porch adjacent to this area, with a sm oak eating table & rattan furniture. The enclosed area was used extensively before the patio. This rm normally turns into a junk/mud rm in winter.

We have one. It provides light and atmosphere, but it is nice, especially this time of year. A little juniper or pinyon smells good too.

Maple, my folks have successfully kept a chimea in MI (outside, during winter) for 4 years now. It really isn't as nice as an open outdoor fireplace, like coleman makes. It doesn't put out hardly any heat and you can't really flame gaze.

Do you guys have a costco around? Birch and I got a really pretty (and functional) firepit there for under $100. It's a wrought iron stand with a beautiful copper bowl that sits on it to hold the fire. There's a grate that fits over the bowl too. 'Bout two and a half feet across.

I have a cast iron chimea that I actually have on my deck. Have had it for 2 years and love it. Got it at home depot. It looks like the clay ones except it has a 360 degree view of the fire. The clay ones don't. The sucker puts off a lot of heat to. Weighs about 100 pounds. Almost as much as me.

Why are you so afraid someone will say something? What are they going to say, put out your fireplace? You can't have that here?

Living in a house is completely different from living in an apartment. One of the great things about it is being able to tell your neighbors to go piss up a rope. If you're not breaking the law, there's not much they can do.

Since you're renting, just make sure you're within your rights as spelled out in the lease, then do whatever you want to.

My wife and I pretty much split up the cooking duties. She will learn a new recipe from time to time and add it to her repertoire.

It never fails to amaze her how I can just conjure up something good out of what we've got though...

Recent conversation:

Her: Hey, this barbecued chicken is good. What kind of sauce is it?

Me: We were out, so I made some.

Her: OK, wow...
