I acclimate to winter hikes by drinking beer out on the deck at Hooters with a little nip in the air.

The Hooters girls seem to like the frosty air.

Seriously, about asthma...
I have asthma too and while I want to do any before-hand bragging about cold weather performance, I do have some tips.

Cold, dry air seizes the bronchial tubes. There are a few things that can help this and one is a cold air mask. These are made by 3M and can be ordered through your pharmacist, like dust masks. I first saw them in Manitoba in the 70's where they were used by hydro and telephone workers. The new ones are much improved.

Otherwise, as you said it was your 'lesser' half that has thin skin, you can thank your Canadian genes, eh?

P.s. DON'T bring beer to FYAO IV (sheesh).

I prepare by letting AmyG put her cold deadman feet on me in the middle of the night. Its equal to dumping a bucket of ice into your boxers.

Either that or I say something really insensitive and wait for the icy cold stare of death. BRRRRR!

You'd Better At Least Do This
My best advice is to 1) figure out which clothing to wear while hiking, and 2) determine what extra clothing to bring to wear while hanging around camp. Tackle both those issues and you should be one step closer to being "acclimated".

"yea, mummy bags make me feel like i'm in a compression bag myself."

I hate mummy bags! I got me a 0degree rectangular down bag that is nice and rommy yet still warm. It weighs 4 lbs but that’s still not too bad for a winter bag. I wear my vest zipped up and around my neck (arms out) and this keeps all drafts away and holds the heat in.

What Budder says about clothing is very true. I hate carrying more clothes than I need but I do make sure I have a dry set for camp and sleeping at the minimum.

Don't know what kinds of temps you're looking at, but remember that cotton kills. Get yourself a wool sweater to wear under your parka, it will work even if you get wet.

Be sure to get a couple pairs of those high tech socks and liners. And get those high tech gloves that wick to wear under your mittens. Whatever you do, don't trust your life to those fold up silver emergency blankets, they are absolutely, 100% worthless if you get wet. Been there. Done that.

I bike and run in the winter, anyway, I don't know if there's any special "acclimation" you've got to make. But, there are safety issues to be aware of.
