3rd grade take a NP field trip.
I have become involved with a 3rd grade class near where I live. Being in cable, I have resources to networks and programmer the likes that have never been seen. I have adopted this 3rd grade class and am having a ball!!!.

This past Friday, I took the entire 3rd grade class up to The Ozark Nation Scenic Riverways for a day with the rangers. I had arranged a nice gift for each child from National Geographic Channel...they sent me 60 backpacks with an explorers kit in each pack...mini clip board, hanging pen, field note book, keychain with a built in compass and a Nat Geo baseball cap...each child received one. I got ahold of the park Superintendant and had him send me a video and Jr Ranger pamphlets, so that the kids could get started early...The student teacher set up and designed lessons around each JR activity...

We arrived at the park and there were 4 rangers ready to teach, entertain and educate the children. The activities lasted each 30 minutes...the activities were...leaf identification and drawings, Mamals of the park, insects and the role they play, and a nature walk where the ranger talked about species, population and habitats.

The children also got to explore on their own and see the big spring...largest in Missouri. and...

I acquired 27 disposable cameras and those that drew a special card were designated "The National Geographic Photographers of the Day". So, here were children, some who had never...NEVER been outside of this small dinky podunk town and others who thought that rangers were cops...they were learning, asking questions...running around having fun, taking pictures of everything!!! It was a blast to see them grow right before my eyes...

At the conclusion, the rangers gave each child a Jr Ranger pin for their hard work and they complimented the teachers on how alert and enthusiastic everyone was.

It was a GREAT day...I feel that I did something really cool and put some cosmic vibrations back into the system...

Next month...its the history of Pilgrims and Native Americans, December is dedicated to 100 years of Flight, I have stuff coming from Discovery Wings and The Wright Brothers Memorial in Kitty Hawk, Jan is Martin Luther King Jr National Memorial and civil rights, Feb is Presidents (Washington and Lincoln) I have stuff coming from C-Span and those respective NPS sites...

Here are some of the pics that I took...link

Very nice! The pics are great. Are you going to post some of the ones the kids took? That would be interesting to see what they think is important enough to take a pic of!

Good job Stikky! I remember my 5th & 6th grade classes would spend a week in either the Sierra Foothills (gold cntry) or Santa Cruz Mtns (marine & coastal studies) doing nature stuff. It pretty much cemented my enjoyment of the out of doors and love of science.

Yo Stik...
Nice job! You're like a modern day Mr Rogers. The cosmic vibrations are definitely in the air....i'm sure some of those kids will talk about that trip for a very long time, if not for the rest of their life. You the man!

Like Tango said...It would be really cool if you could post some of the pics they shot.
