There has been some active solar weather in the past few days. The next few days might bring some auroras.

Anyone know if they have ever been sighted in upstate NY? I would hop in the car for a long drive if I had an inkling that I would see something like that...

The only northern lights we get to see down here are from the cars of the snow birds on their way to Gulf Shores...

Is it the reflections off the white shoes?

I heard on the news that a really
big solar flare is supposed to hit
today.Mebbe damaging power lines
and cell service. I guess a flare like that would create a great light show.

Space Weather News for Oct. 24, 2003

http://spaceweather.com

Many people think you can only see auroras from far-north places like
Alaska and Canada. Not so. Photographer Chris Schur catches them surprisingly often from Arizona--including some this week. Visit spaceweather.com for pictures of Arizona auroras and observing tips for mid-latitude aurora watchers.

As a result of ongoing solar activity, auroras are possible tonight in the United States, Canada, southern Australia, New Zealand, and much of Europe. In the U.S.A. northern border states such as Maine, Michigan, and
Washington are favored--and, of course, Alaska. Sky watchers are advised to get away from city lights, if possible, and pay extra attention to their sky around local midnight, when auroras are most likely to appear.

I know Michigan is going to get some good views if the rain holds out.

my neighbor said she saw a metor the other night. She said she saw it "fly" through the sky, suppose to been really large, and I guess it light up the whole sky. Then it broke into small little red glowing pieces...

hmmm, I kind a thought..."well, if you say so"....but maybe she did see something huh???

During times of activity, aurora can be seen as far south as Arizona and Georgia.

No sign of them, yet. At least not in Eagle River, Alaska. We're a little hazy, but it looks like it will clear up.

I will get pictures when they show up.

I'm afraid the haze I spoke of earlier has developed into rainclouds. If there's anything going on up there, we can't see it at all in Eagle River.

Going backpacking this weekend, though, so probably get some pictures.
