Warren Sapp vs John RockerView MessagesDiscuss “Someone explain why it is OK for a Negro athlete to make racist comments, but a Caucasion athlete is persecuted for it.” 7:22:05 AM 10/24/03 “May be a double standard there, BP. But, both should not be condoned and both shoudl be chastised IMO.” 7:38:42 AM 10/24/03 You're as bad as Sapp. “It's obviously not okay to make racist, and trying to make a racial issue out of the media's coverage makes you just as bad as Sapp. HBO Inside the NFL: Bob Costas said, "In light of the developments of the last couple of weeks, if we are going to take exception to insensitive comments... when they come from one direction, then in order to be honest we ought to take at least some measure of exception when someone needlessly and stupidly injects race into a conversation when it comes from another direction. "Anybody, white or black, who cares about the present state of race relations in America, and the scarred history of it in this country, would never trivialize that discussion by likening being disciplined for football infractions to anything that has to do with slavery or racism. It's so far out of bounds, it is out of the stadium."” 8:45:21 AM 10/24/03 “"Make racist statements"” 8:49:15 AM 10/24/03 “What both Phaedrus and Bob Costas said...” 8:50:22 AM 10/24/03 “What's a negro?” 9:05:01 AM 10/24/03 “I don't know a whole lot about the particulars of this case, but I read that one of the guys said something like he was joking with his friend, and the other guy wasn't offended. Not sure if this is actually the case, but maybe these guys joke with each other about their respective race's stereotypes. I know I (white guy) can joke around with my brother-in-law (black guy), using watermelon and fried chicken references, and he feels comfortable ridiculing me for my inability to leap. If that is the case for the two athletes, maybe we should have more of that kind of thing? I recall that the John Rocker thing sounded like a genuine hateful rant, although, to be fair, I don't know Rocker personally, so am technically not aware of his intent.” 9:12:14 AM 10/24/03 FYI, Kleety... 9:12:35 AM 10/24/03 “Rocker is an ignorant, hateful pig...” 9:14:05 AM 10/24/03 “I invited Cynthia - a former black girlfriend - on a dayhike in North Ga... promising her that I'd have her out of there before sundown. She LOL'd. While we were visiting my brother, I told my bro to keep an eye on her so's not to let her get carried away in his watermelon patch. She was standing right *there*. We all LOL'd. I often referred to black students as "Black African-American colored negroes" - or "my colored boys". It always got a laugh. I have an inate desire to be multilingual, but college Spanish was a dud. Therefore, I've had to settle for ebonics. I use it freely in almost any circumstance. Peep's be gettin' a kick from it - especially the kids. "You sound like my dad!" they'd often say. Me: "When chu get'cho hair did?" Black female colleague: "LOL!" At the micro level, race relations are quite fine down south, imo, but you wouldn't believe it listening to the Jesse's, et al. There IS a blatant double-standard at the macro level, tho... everywhere! - but you wouldn't believe it listening to the Jesse's, et al.” 10:37:12 AM 10/24/03 “I thought this was going to be a story about an upcoming Toughman fight...” 10:39:55 AM 10/24/03 “I'd like to meet you some time gojo, you strike me as a good person, but it seems to me that you have a pollyanna complex when it comes to race relations in the South...” 10:40:22 AM 10/24/03 “HMmmm... I sure wouldn't use any of those terms in regard to my black friends. We're pretty different, Gojo.” 10:42:46 AM 10/24/03 “What, goose? You been liss'nin to Jesse?” 10:43:00 AM 10/24/03 “Phade - The delivery is key.” 10:45:09 AM 10/24/03 “Maybe. In my mind, though, I would be showing disrespect to them by saying things like that. Everyone is different, and individual relationships are the business of the people involved.” 10:47:49 AM 10/24/03 gojo... “I'm pretty outspoken (yeah, I know it's hard to believe) when it comes to things I deeply believe in. I've been threatened with lynching, cross-burning, etc., by some rather influential people in this state because of my stance on racism. I would never speak to my black friends the way you do to yours. They would deem it discourteous and disrespectful.” 10:50:39 AM 10/24/03 “In the early eighties, a good friend of mine was shipping out to Marine Corps boot camp. He asked me to tend bar at his going away party. I was the only whitey there. A New York negro was standing at the bar. We were chatting. Agreeing with something he said, I say's "Yeah boy blah blah..." "WHAT?!" he exclaimed. "I ain't no 'BOY' blah blah...!" I'm like "Dood... relax!" It was rather comical. I danced my way into the heart of every girl there, btw... (o:” 10:53:48 AM 10/24/03 “I think it depends on how comfortable you are with each other. I have had black friends that we would talk to each other like Gojo described and others that you would never even dream of joking like that with. If they are cool with it and you are cool with then whats the problem? Just be aware of who you are talking to.” 11:07:08 AM 10/24/03 “To read what I've written is interpreted differently by each individual. To see and hear me say those things is quite a different matter. "Peace-OUT!" (holding hand slightly above head and forming a peace sign, then suddenly switching to an umpires sign for "out" and thrusting fist toward the floor)” 11:08:58 AM 10/24/03 “Phaedrus, it's obviously not okay to make hateful staements, and trying to make a hateful statement out of the bacpac's question makes you just as bad as Rocker.” 11:38:19 AM 10/24/03 “It may also have something to do with what part of the country you are in. As an example, a nice young lady from Mississippi once visited me. We were in downtown Seattle when she saw a black family with an adorable young girl, perhaps 1 1/2 years old. She says, "Oooh, look at that cuuute lil #&%!$ baby!" My friends and I were horrified. She noticed the shock on our faces and explained that that's just how everyone she knew back home referred to young black children. I seem to remember gojo referring to those of Japanese descent as Japs a while back. You just don't use that phrase around here.” 11:43:49 AM 10/24/03 “Here in Alabama the crackers refer to 'em as pickininnies. Still not acceptable in polite society.” 11:48:31 AM 10/24/03 “"Someone explain why it is OK for a Negro athlete to make racist comments, but a Caucasion athlete is persecuted for it............" It's not. If people make a big enough stink about it, those athletes would be poo poo'd. It's what we as a people tollerate. I don't agree with it. In a perfect world, there should be no double standards, so we have a lot of work to do if we want things to cut both ways. It starts with us, the common folk.” 12:00:20 PM 10/24/03 “Arclite: How was what I said hateful?” 12:13:52 PM 10/24/03 “Phaedy said something bad about me arclight? Surprise Surprise. That is why I put the narrow minded fool on ignore. This is a clear cut case of media bias. The liberals who refuse to accept that mainstream media has different rules for reporting based on ideology are blinded by their own ignorance.” 12:39:08 PM 10/24/03 “If that's the case, the right-wing media, both print and broadcast should be trumpeting the Sapp story... Are they? If not, it lends credibility to my assertion that it's a non-starter.” 12:48:52 PM 10/24/03 “Sapp's an arse. I don't want him on my team.” 12:53:04 PM 10/24/03 “Sapp's a bad mo'fo. He can be on my team any day. Would I have him over for tea and crumpets???...prolly not...” 1:06:57 PM 10/24/03 “How about beer and red meat, straight off the bone?” 1:13:17 PM 10/24/03 “I hear he just bites a hole in the keg...” 1:37:51 PM 10/24/03 “I seem to remember gojo referring to those of Japanese descent as Japs a while back. You just don't use that phrase around here." ~kleetn Context is important. That was prolly when I was speaking of the warriors of the Imperial Japanese Navy, Air Corps, and Army. I remember conveying a story about my dad's ships' crew plucking a Jap pilot from the drink, and rightfully giving him a burial at sea with full military honors. "Jap(s)" was as common as "Times", "Chronicle", "Argus", etc, on the front pages of our nation's news papers during WWII. I remember posting about the WWII era poster I had in my office. It was a pic of Uncle Sam rolling up the sleeve of the arm with which he was weilding a large wrench. The caption read: "Jap, you're next!" I drive a Japanese truck, BTW.” 1:38:53 PM 10/24/03 gojo's ok “Japs is about as offensive as Yanks. Y'all need to stop nit- pickin. A man's heart is most important. Take the time to read it.” 1:42:13 PM 10/24/03 “No doubt on my part as far as that goes. I'd have Gojo over for beers anytime.” 1:45:19 PM 10/24/03 “"pickininny" is a new term to me. I once saw an "Erasism" bumpersticker. I've looked for one since, but to no avail. That would be a message to all, to be sure, but I would focus it toward the NAACP, who, imo, are as racist as any group in America today.” 1:49:22 PM 10/24/03 “Why do you think so, Gojo?” 1:55:17 PM 10/24/03 “Sorry, but I don't get "Erasism"? What does that mean?” 3:07:21 PM 10/24/03 “"If that's the case, the right-wing media, both print and broadcast should be trumpeting the Sapp story... Are they?" Phaedrus Bwaaaaaahahahah.... What "right-wing" media? Fox? Bwaaaaaaaahahah...because they present SOME "right-wing" views? Many people won't touch the Sapp issue with a ten-foot pole because the political correctness police in the "liberal" media would crucify them. It's pretty obvious Phaedrus. Open your mind and think, boy. Rush may be pretty tactless but there was some truth to what he said about the media and blacks. Sometimes the truth offends people, and they respond by lashing out. What hateful comments, Phaedrus? I'm just responding to the ridiculousness of this post: "It's obviously not okay to make racist, and trying to make a racial issue out of the media's coverage makes you just as bad as Sapp." Bacpac asks a question and you jump all over him like some sort of politically correct "liberal." Hmmmmmm....” 3:46:47 PM 10/24/03 “ROFL! I see you're looking at everything from an objective, unbiased postion, Arclite! So your contention is that the Sapp story IS an inflammatory self-running story that's getting hushed by the "liberal" media because Sapp is black? I want to make sure I have the correct position to debate. Bacpac's question was obviously loaded, so don't give me the innocent "he just asked a question" crap. We're not in third grade anymore.” 4:30:08 PM 10/24/03 “"Erasism" may have been spelled "eracism". It's a blend of the words erase and racism...” 5:24:28 PM 10/24/03 “Did Phaedy really say that? What right wing media is he talking about? There is no defense against such biased behavior. The media's liberal slant impacts all the news they report. The American public has become so brainwashed they can't tell the difference.” 6:40:57 PM 10/24/03 “Rocker, Limbaugh, Hitler, bacpac, et al.” 10:23:19 PM 10/24/03 “i can't remember but didn't rocker just rag on newyorkers? that would make him a new yorkist....not racist... there is obviously a blinding double standard among the overwhelmingly liberal media elitist when it comes to things of this nature.... bacpacs assertion misses the mark somewhat...the reason they crucified rush is not cause he's white, it's cause he's conservative....sapp's a liberal so they give him a pass.... don't believe me? here's another irrefutible example ....anybody heard about matt laurer's drug use? no? why not? you heard about rush's drug use, and arnolds too....it's a cultural war to them(the liberals) and truth and even handedness are the victoms of their unbridaled desire to rule....not lead...but rule this nation. everything they do is to this end. not to help people, not to make society a better place...but to rule it... racism is now an industry....just like poverty...the people who make the most noise about these things are the people who depend on them to survive. beurocrats feeding at the public trough. liberal policies create dependancy, they do not solve racism and poverty. liberals need poverty and racism to survive so they will never solve these problems.... what's sad is how many well intentioned people blindly follow them without looking at the forest, only seeing the trees” 10:48:24 PM 10/24/03 “Sapp, Franken, Stalin, Alaska, et al.” 10:51:22 PM 10/24/03 “I think we have become way too sensitive to the race issue. A colorblind society is a utopian myth and will NEVER happen. Who would want it to be so? We are all different and we should celebrate our differences. I didn’t even hear what Sapp said so this post is in general. To think that race should never ever be a factor is just plain silly. It reminds me of the Dusty Baker deal where he had to apologize for stating that his black players performed better in the hot heat. Sheesh! That’s not a stereotype, it’s a fact and I find nothing wrong in recognizing a races strengths.” 9:57:56 AM 10/25/03 “Strat, that's quite a rant. You realise, of course, you'll need to make an argument for it with EVIDENCE, right? The whole culture-war evil liberal dependent class thing is hyperbolic, played out rhetoric. Find an argument with some meat to it, and we'll talk. Heck, we might even come to agree on some things.” 10:06:10 AM 10/25/03 Maybe Sapp's just having a bad week “Buccaneers | Another Sapp Controversy - from www.KFFL.com Fri, 24 Oct 2003 10:10:05 -0700 Roger Mills and Scott Purks, of the St. Petersburg Times, report Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Warren Sapp, apparently, verbally abused a visiting high-school football coach during an earlier practice. Mike DePue, a local high-school football coach, and his assistants were invited to visit a Buccaneers' practice after DePue was named the Bucs' coach of the week. "We were just watching, staying out of the way, when Sapp, apparently because eye contact was made, comes up and says, 'Do you see what you're looking for?'" DePue said. "Then he went on into a nasty tirade with a lot of foul language. It was verbal abuse, it really was. It was very uncomfortable. The only thing I told him was that we were guests and all we're doing is looking around." Head coach Jon Gruden addressed the issue on Thursday, Oct. 23. He said he had talked to both parties and that he was confident the issue was over. "I don't like anything negative surrounding our football players, certainly a guy like Warren Sapp. But we're moving on from the issue and it seems like we have it resolved," Gruden said.” 10:53:25 AM 10/25/03 “That's Sapp being Sapp. He';s an a-hole from time to time. That doesn't make him a racist does it? How boring the NFL would be without colerful guys like him. We NEED guys like him! LOL! Then again, I loved Albert Bell too.” 11:00:51 AM 10/25/03 “stratdewd, that's 100% pferd scheisse. I saw Al Franken of the Tonight Show last night! Wow!” 11:03:51 AM 10/25/03 “We'd take Sapp in Detroit! We all the help we can get!” 11:16:02 AM 10/25/03
