Yep. That's the concern.

You've got to admit, though, that Clark/Dean or Dean/Clark sure beats the heck outta Dean/Gephardt or Clark/Lieberman.

It would be a hard pill for me to take if it was Dean/Clark...

I'd be perfectly happy with that combination. I think Clark is the man for foriegn relations, and Dean is the guy for domestic policy.

Howard Dean interesting...
First, environmental issues cannot be isolated from other issues. President Bush and his henchmen try to sweep the environment under the rug; I will bring it back into the light. Environmental policy cannot be separated from other issues such as energy, trade, or economic policy. This is one reason that I will ask Congress to elevate the Environmental Protection Agency to cabinet status immediately, and not drag the process out with contentious debates about restructuring. We should take this step not only to reaffirm our commitment to the environment to ourselves, but to demonstrate it to the world.

Dean on the Environment

I am starting my investigation.

Women’s voices will resonate in a Dean Administration. As Governor, I appointed more women to positions of leadership than in any other state in the nation and nearly 50% of my judicial appointments were women. At one point, the percentage of women appointees in my Administration exceeded the percentage of women in Vermont.

He's done. AFSCME (the union I work for) endorsed Dean yesterday, bringing along about 3 million voters with them. They have endorsed the last several dem nominees, prior to the nominees becoming frontrunners.

Furthermore, AFCSME, along with the AFL-CIO, and a large coalition of unions, for the first time, is launching an unprecedented, massive election effort for the upcoming election. They are unbelievably organized. I've been to 3 large scale meetings in the past 3 months alone, dedicated to this issue. Each union local now has a political action member who will hand out literature, coordinate polling stations, and discuss issues at local meetings. The people in my locals are sharp, dedicated, and very driven. The difference is, I'm not seeing the "whiney" democratic party of the past with splits over key issues. This drive is based on common issues that appeal to swing voters, and the democratic base.

It should be very interesting. I'll be at another big pow-wow next week, where they will prolly unveil even more plans and details.

All I know is the next year will be veeerrry interesting, and Dean will be the Democratic nominee for president.

I'd like to asak how do the Repubs plan to have the world put there troops in, when we do chit like this?

U.S. Allies Denounce Bidding Bar

PARIS — Nations that opposed the U.S.-led war in Iraq denounced on Wednesday the Pentagon's (search) decision to bar their companies from bidding for $18.6 billion worth of reconstruction contracts, with France questioning its legality and Canada (search) threatening to halt aid.

Germany (search) denounced the Pentagon decision, calling it "unacceptable," and Russia issued an implicit threat that, in response, it would take a harder line on restructuring Iraqi debt as Washington seeks.

"We noted with astonishment today the reports and we will be speaking about it with the American side," German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said after talks with his Russian counterpart, Igor Ivanov.

The directive from U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz limits bidders for 26 lucrative contracts in Iraq to firms from the United States, Iraq, their coalition partners and other countries which have sent troops to Iraq.

It says restricting contract bids "is necessary for the protection of the essential security interests of the United States."

The ruling, posted on a Pentagon Web site Tuesday, bars companies from France, Germany, Canada and Russia from bidding on those contracts -- worth $18.6 billion -- because their governments opposed the American-led war that ousted Saddam Hussein's regime. Countries that did not sent troops would be eligible for subcontracting work in Iraq.

Wolfowitz wrote that the restrictions would encourage other countries to join the coalition in Iraq.

But the initial reaction from other nations pointed more to a backlash.

In Paris, Foreign Ministry spokesman Herve Ladsous said that France had "taken note" of the Pentagon's decision and was studying whether it follows international law.

"We don't want to make any commentary at this stage," Ladsous said. "We are studying these decisions' compatibility with international competition law, in liaison with our partners, notably the European Union and the (European) Commission."

If the report of the order is accurate, "it would be difficult for us to give further money for the reconstruction of Iraq," said Canada's deputy prime minister, John Manley. "To exclude Canadians just because they are Canadians would be unacceptable if they accept funds from Canadian taxpayers for the reconstruction of Iraq."

Steven Hogue, a spokesman for Prime Minister Jean Chretien, said Canada has contributed more than $190 million to the rebuilding effort.

Asked about the Pentagon decision, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov stressed Wednesday that Moscow does not intend to write off Iraq's multibillion dollar debt.

"Iraq's debt to the Russia Federation comes to $8 billion and as far as the Russian government's position on this, it is not planning any kind of a write-off of that debt," Ivanov told a news conference. "Iraq is not a poor country."

Russian officials have rejected calls by U.S. officials for a complete write-off of Iraq's debt, much of it left over from the Soviet era, but President Vladimir Putin and others have said in the past that they were willing to consider restructuring the debt.

Ivanov appeared to be threatening to take a harder line on restructuring. He did not comment directly on the U.S. decision, but he said that "Russia has great economic interest in Iraq."

In Berlin, Russia's foreign minister, Igor Ivanov, said the decision contradicted earlier promises by President Bush.

"I believe that this is in the common interest, and all who are prepared to participate in it should be given every possibility to do so," Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told reporters at a press conference alongside his German counterpart, Joschka Fischer.

Bush "he has stressed several times that the presence of the U.S. forces is of a provisional nature and the Iraqi people themselves should make decisions about their resources," Ivanov said.

The order from Wolfowitz covers contracts to manage the entire rebuilding effort, train and equip the Iraqi National Army and rebuild infrastructure including roads, sewers, power plants and oil fields.

Now, granted that we would like to give our "buddies" all the goodies, but don't ya think that this would have been a great opp to smooth over some rough edges with our "Allies" to get them to put there troops in? Do we expect to just bully people into doing our bidding? This is what happens when chit on the rest of the world. I thought Bush was a uniter? What has he united? Everything he touches causes people to become divided. Remember----United, We Stand.....Divided, We Fall.....
