I was just corresponding with a gal about some geocaches down this way and mentioned going to Cumberland. This was her advice:

If you have room in your backpack, bring a pack of incense sticks (fat ones). They help to keep sand gnats away.

Anyone done this? Would a citronella candle in the candle lantern work just as well? (although I think my citronella candles got ruined, so all I have are regular ones at this point)

And now....... everyone please make jokes about "fatties." LOL!

If incense works, maybe mosquito coils would work. I burned so many mosquito coils living in AK, they smell like incense to me.

I would say that if the mosquitos want you, only 100 percent DEET will keep them away.

I fear the mild weather will have the no-see-ums astir. I've never considered the skteers to be much of a problem there.

We may hafta spend the entire trip on the beach so's to keep out of the bugs... well, middle dunes anyway.

I've got some bug lotion with a ton of DEET in it I'll make sure to bring. I think it says "2,000 lbs. of DEET in this product on the label." Think that might work?? LOL! Geez, I wish my citronella candles for the candle lantern hadn't gotten trashed. Will see if I can stop at REI or whatever on the way to airport.

Thaks for the info, humanpackmule... skully e-mailed me when she realized our paths might cross. It could be as fast as a fleeting "hi" - "bye" if they come over Saturday a.m. and we're leaving. Maybe we could still grab a pic!! lol Or maybe a bit more time for conversation if they come over Friday on the late ferry.

Any time.
BTW the weather here is stellar right now. Warm enough during the day to wear shorts (or not) and cool enough at night to wear a light jacket (or not)

Thouroughly pleasant.

Sounds like superb weather, if indeed it doesn't stir up the bugs too bad.

Right now where I am it's bright, sunny... and then the BAD NEWS >> 13 degrees with a -7 windchill. It's wicked out!!! Hard to pack for warm temps when you're bundled up at home even!!! BUT... a very welcome break. :-)

OK, the word is fine for Wed. a.m. ferry. The island sites are booked for Friday and Sat., so SUPPOSEDLY we're coming back on the Friday a.m. ferry. Gojo assures me with his wily ways (ok, and a bit of knowledge from his visits... lol) we will be able to stay Friday, too. Looking forward to "the island!!"

Don't worry Lizs, they've been assuring me that Friday was booked solid for over a month now. There are almost always last minute cancellations though.

At this time we're a go for getting there Friday morning early enought to make the late ferry. Which means we'll get to say hey on the way by if you guys leave Friday morning. (meet each other coming and going?)

They've thrown rain back into the forcast for this week but it still looks clear for the weekend. I'm sure that'll change hourly.
