This is great news. Let's see if it continues. Unemployment needs to drop in order for us to making real recovery. Otherwise, not too bad for a situation that's been in the dumper for about three years. But just remember, one good quarter dosen't make a recovery.

"Although the nation's payrolls grew by 57,000 in September - the first increase in eight months - the economy needs to add a lot more jobs than that each month to drive down the 6.1 percent unemployment rate, analysts have said........."

My stocks are up by an ave. of 20% this year and my company stock is up over 70%, but I'm not convinced that anything has really changed for the better. With the low interest rates people are borrowing money and spending it with wild abandon and it's going to catch back up to the economy eventually.

Big F-ing deal UpUrs! Anything looks like UP from the gutter. People have lost Trillions since 2000 and the markets and indeces are finally starting to move up after being driven to the lowest leevels since the mid-90's. Now we're leveraging this recovery to the max. the economy smells like 80's Reganomics all over again! Prepare to get "trickled" on!

Trying to prove a strong economy with daily market results is as futile as trying to prove a bad economy with daily market results.

Holy Cow! Beef Prices May Rise 75%

7:35 a.m. EST October 30, 2003 - Get ready for a shock at the meat counter -- prices are about to soar.

Beef wholesale prices have almost doubled and retailers like Jim McCaffery say, unfortunately, the costs will have to be passed on to the consumer eventually.
McCaffery said the price shoppers will have to pay would go up 50 to 75 percent.

"We're experiencing a shortage of cattle. The farmers are asking for more money because he knows we're in a shortage situation, therefore we pay higher prices for cattle and we pass this higher cost along to retailers," said Rick Fetrow of Tyson Foods.

The shortage is because cattlemen were losing money about three years ago, so they decided to cut back production. Then there was a mad cow scare in Canada.

"So that did two things. One: Beef started to be imported into Canada from the United States, and Canada was not exporting to the United States, so that created a huge demand," McCaffery said.

Add to that the fact that beef consumption is up about 10 percent because of the popular high-protein diets, and you have what some have called a perfect storm for beef prices.

McCaffery says we'll see an increase of $3- or $4-a-pound, and there may be a shortage of the choice meats. He also said the price hikes could spill over to other items in the meat counter.

"Consumers are going to be faced with higher beef prices -- not only higher beef prices, but as this thing rolls out we could possibly see higher beef prices, higher pork prices and higher poultry prices as a result," Fetrow said.

Given the huge deficit spending, the war, and the fact that we are coming off a very long sustained slow down and job loss... we should be seeing big growth numbers for a while - and will have to if we are going to make up for the jobs lost so far. Hopefully that will happen.

I wonder, realy, how much "recovery" would we have to get back up to where we were before the economy went south? Only then could it be called true progress.....

Don't forget to adjust for inflation as well.

Remind me again about the perils of the national debt--- tight credit and soaring interest rates?
In the 60s and 70s, wasn't 6% joblessness considered full employment?
And if I recall, if you sat tight through 1987, the DOW was up slightly.
