War of the Worlds

“Orson Welles broadcast his famous “War of the Worlds” radio program on this day in 1938 and caused great panic across America. Welles adapted H.G. Wells’s science-fiction novel about a Martian invasion into a radio play, but the production was performed as if the events were developing live. The play was interrupted by a number of phony news bulletins relating to the supposed Martian invasion, and the events were so realistic that panic ensued. Listeners prepared for alien war by taking to roads and cellars and arming themselves.”
