Here resides one of the most successful marmots you’ll ever meet. (lefthand corner of photo) At over thirteen and a half thousand feet above sea level, it’s no coincidence that this marmot hangs out where wary backpackers leave their packs unattended on the side of the trail as they climb the spur trail to the summit of Mt. Whitney. Yes, this marmot does very well for himself and his family. Fattened by Cheetos®, GORP®, Quaker’s® Instant Oatmeal, Red Vine® licorice, Mountain House® beef stroganoff, PowerBar®’s, just to name a few, this furry fella has a stockpile of food that’s the envy of the marmot world. He’s the “Bill Gates” of marmots. This guy even has fancy imported gourmet granola flown in from the finest orchards in the world. Many of the rocks in this photo are not even real, they are strategically hinged with fully air-conditioned underground tunnels leading to the most popular pack rest spots. He has a plasma HDTV with 422 satellite channels, satellite internet, 3 wives and 14 concubines. He is yellowbellied through and through, although some suggest he acts more hoary. He defends his territory with state-of-the-art surface-to-surface anti-cougar missiles, and can detect even the smallest eagle from 1.5 miles away. Yes, one cannot deny, despite the harsh conditions, he has done quite well for himself here. Watch where you set your pack. I'm a big dorky goof, but for reals, watch your pack.

Here's a close-up shot of the same Trail Crest marmot. He looks fuzzy and cute, sure, but turn your back and he'll rob you blind. Hmmmpphh.

Does he use any kind of weapon when he robs you?

To be honest, I found them to taste more like rattlesnake than chicken.

Looks like the same marmot HPM photographed.

treebait, this very well could be the same marmot that HPM (and Fritz) saw, but remember, this guy is a master of disguise. He can make himself look like another marmot just LIKE THAT (snapping fingers). But most likely it's the same dude, he lives there. I hiked out some poop pellets from this guy for DNA analysis, if they have some poop from the marmot they saw too, we can see if there's a match. DNA doesn't lie.

One and the same. The little robber baron held us at gunpoint for a trail mix toll.

He just had you held at gunpoint? You were lucky. When he held us up, he was hovering at eye level in an Apache Attack Helicopter with his itchy paws on the triggers. Damn it was tough to relinquish the last of those cashews.

Well Buck he had to as he was on his cell phone at the time. He would have never been able to hear the caller over the rotors.

I wonder what his red blood cell count is? He'd probably die of a stroke at sea level!

Last summer we saw this Marmot at the top of Mt. Harvard in Colorado. 14,430 ft. She was begging food. She was bold and not above grabbing whatever she could, food or not.
Pictured here with Karen signing the summit register.
