Winter JacketView Messages“I need to get a good winter hiking jacket. any suggestions that won't leave me broke? Thanks” 8:58:46 AM 11/10/03 “take treebeards jacket...free :)” 8:59:57 AM 11/10/03 “Take Bubble Boy jacket? No way! that thing is soooo big.” 9:03:36 AM 11/10/03 “One of the Lowe Alpine w'proof/brthable parkas are very reasonable and functional and pair it with a non windblock fleece. IMO.” 9:06:32 AM 11/10/03 “any link?” 9:07:20 AM 11/10/03 “Oh yes, Cabela's have a 300 weight, hooded fleece parka for US 49,95$. This combo would be hard to beat in terms of warmth and value for money - and if the fleece is too long for the parka, you can have it sortened for very little. I hope this helps. P.s. Don't forget the 'Super Special Deals' at Campmor and the deals at Sierra Trading Post.” 9:10:01 AM 11/10/03 “Hey, Maple, completely off topic, but I managed to meet quite a few of Calmwater's multiple personalities this weekend! Backpacking John, Band/Musician John, Drunk John, and Hangover John! Oh, and I'm in love with this jacket..... ![]() It's a North Face and I will have it by Christmas. I think it runs about 250 and it's a down jacket.” 9:11:34 AM 11/10/03 “LOL glad you all had a good time on the trail instead of coming into NY. :D~ that is a nice jacket, but gotta watch my $$...(tree is watching)” 9:13:25 AM 11/10/03 “Hey maple, I asked every one this weekend that question about 6.5 times. Rich B said Cabelas has a good deal on a jacket for 80. Pennsy had this awsome mountain hardware jacket for I don't know how much. But I am probably going to buy the Campmor brand high peaks down parka. Its like 60 bucks, 600 down. Looks like a good deal.” 9:18:27 AM 11/10/03 “I meant.... um.... yea, it's 2.50 or so. Quick, go buy it while Tree isn't looking” 9:18:46 AM 11/10/03 “Go take your midterm, Tea” 9:21:52 AM 11/10/03 “Down parkas are nice for North Dakota/Manitoba, or for the outdoor equivalent of a couch potato - IMHO - stick to layering if you want it for Active duty.” 9:28:14 AM 11/10/03 “Down parkas are awesome to sit around camp with... I wouldn't hike with it on or I'd sweat to death.” 9:29:27 AM 11/10/03 Scorchfire 9:34:45 AM 11/10/03 9:38:03 AM 11/10/03 Wow! $9.89 off the price “What a bahh-gain! YO BB, did you get the email I sent you this weekend?” 9:38:12 AM 11/10/03 “Land's End has some good deals.” 9:38:36 AM 11/10/03 9:39:18 AM 11/10/03 “Sierra Trading Post has some good prices on Columbia parkas with zip-out liners. they always have limited sizes there, though!” 9:39:55 AM 11/10/03 Cap'n “I got your email. I'm not sure what I want to do yet. Since I have no training on glacial traversing yet, and after speaking to LtWtBkpkr, I'm thinking of going through the guide service at the moment. This will be something that I plan on doing next year, so there is plenty of time to think/plan for it.” 9:44:43 AM 11/10/03 “Good deal, BB. Keep me in mind if your plans solidify. and now we return you to your regularly scheduled thread....” 9:51:30 AM 11/10/03 “Maple, Northern Mountain has a Golite Six month Night Polarguard 3D Parka on sale for $79. I just bought one and it's a nice coat for $79. Double layer with no sewn through seams and weigh 2 pounds.” 9:53:05 AM 11/10/03 9:55:48 AM 11/10/03 “No, it's called the Golite six month night and has double the insulation of the Golite coal. Mgear.com has it too, but it's $99 over there.” 9:59:30 AM 11/10/03 “hmmm cant find any of them.... :(” 10:04:07 AM 11/10/03 “The Golite Six Month Night Doodad Of course, the Arc'teryx Fission SV Jacket is on sale for $80 off at Altrec.com... so now it's only $320...” 10:29:52 AM 11/10/03 “Maple, I'll try to make a link. ” 10:30:53 AM 11/10/03 “thank you” 10:31:50 AM 11/10/03 “Sorry, my link didn't work. Thanks Tilt.” 10:32:38 AM 11/10/03 10:39:57 AM 11/10/03 “Nothin' to it, <G>” 10:44:20 AM 11/10/03 “Are you looking for a down jacket for in camp or something for on the trail use. If you want a down jacket go for the overstocks at Lands End. They have down jackets for $39.50. A ton of us on here have them and like them quite a bit. Beats the hell out of over $100 for the same thing. Lands End down jackets in the overstock section” 10:47:40 AM 11/10/03 10:49:08 AM 11/10/03 “stupid question here, but can you get something that is for both?” 10:49:57 AM 11/10/03 “Hmmm... a good winter hiking jacket. Well, as for me and my household, I'm a proponent of using the layering system. I would make sure I had a good waterproof/breathable shell and then have varying layers of fleece or a down jacket. You start gettin' warm, simply shed a layer or two, if you are freezing cold, put on a big poofy down jacket, all fully protected from the elements underneath your super duper flipper dipper shell. I have spoken.” 10:52:57 AM 11/10/03 “Dam it Buck! That’s what I was going to say.” 10:56:38 AM 11/10/03 “Mapie - I bought the Moostone Cirrus jacket. They have a hooded version. I have no idea how it's going to work for this winter, however, I've been in low temps with worse equipment. I have the Cirrus vest also, so I'll be using it as a layer. I also bought a 200 weight Fleece REI something or other at a REI garage sale for 3.00. It's wind stopper, so maybe a combo of all of these would work. The fleece is a little heavy, but the Moonstone stuff is real light weight! Layering is the key iffin you want some thing to hike in. I see that at REI-outlet, they have a couple of sweet Moonstone jackets: Moonstone Minimalist Down Jacket: http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?storeId=8001&catalogId=40000008001&productId=47671670&parent_category_rn=22039783 The one I have - Moonstone Cirrus Jacket: http://www.rei.com/online/store/Search?stat=8265&langId=-1&storeId=8001&textQuery=moonstone The whole listing: http://www.rei.com/online/store/Search?stat=8265&langId=-1&storeId=8001&textQuery=moonstone I hate to be a Moonstone homey, but that shayt just ROCKS!!” 10:59:21 AM 11/10/03 “Goretex XCR is awesome. I highly recommend a jacket made from it, if you can find it. I'm amazed at how well mine breathes. It can get very pricey though, keep an eye out for deals.” 11:03:14 AM 11/10/03 “Maple it's just a question of when you wear it. When I'm in camp I wear everything. Thermals, fleece, down jacket, rain shell, gloves, hat. On the trail I shed layers untill I don't sweat. (but I always sweat no matter what, I'm an inferno) If I have to wear all of my layers on the trail to keep me warm then I'll be in trouble in camp.” 11:04:40 AM 11/10/03 11:08:02 AM 11/10/03 “I don't think that one is XCR, but little matter, the standard Gore-Tex does the trick as well, from what I've heard. I can only really speak for the Gore-Tex XCR though, since that's the only one I own. Good luck! :-)” 11:14:17 AM 11/10/03 “"umm and how will these keep me warm? tilt, are you bacpac??" mapleleaf Who? What? ..... HEY, I've been called worse things by better people (but I can't remember when).” 11:17:01 AM 11/10/03 “LOL because your link lead me to bullets.... just teasing ya. hey, im a better people!” 11:23:03 AM 11/10/03 “.... now if you could only get everyone to send you a "donation" for your new jacket?” 11:26:56 AM 11/10/03 “whta's the difference between regular gore-tex and the gore-tex XCR? (yeah, I am also looking for a jacket)” 11:27:18 AM 11/10/03 “good question!” 11:28:00 AM 11/10/03 “I’m just guessing on this but, I think the gore-tex XCR is the new gore-tex that is suppose to be more flexible and less prone to cracking.” 11:32:25 AM 11/10/03 “Who doesn't want a Polartec 300 jacket with matching bullets??? (or the occasional crossbow?)” 11:32:48 AM 11/10/03 “ ![]() should I wear this to go with the bullets?” 11:36:04 AM 11/10/03 XCR “eXtra-Crotch-Relief?” 11:38:24 AM 11/10/03
