One of the Lowe Alpine w'proof/brthable parkas are very reasonable and functional and pair it with a non windblock fleece. IMO.

Oh yes, Cabela's have a 300 weight, hooded fleece parka for US 49,95$. This combo would be hard to beat in terms of warmth and value for money - and if the fleece is too long for the parka, you can have it sortened for very little.

I hope this helps.

P.s. Don't forget the 'Super Special Deals' at Campmor and the deals at Sierra Trading Post.

Hey, Maple, completely off topic, but I managed to meet quite a few of Calmwater's multiple personalities this weekend! Backpacking John, Band/Musician John, Drunk John, and Hangover John!

Oh, and I'm in love with this jacket.....

It's a North Face and I will have it by Christmas. I think it runs about 250 and it's a down jacket.

Hey maple,

I asked every one this weekend that question about 6.5 times. Rich B said Cabelas has a good deal on a jacket for 80. Pennsy had this awsome mountain hardware jacket for I don't know how much.

But I am probably going to buy the Campmor brand high peaks down parka. Its like 60 bucks, 600 down. Looks like a good deal.

Down parkas are nice for North Dakota/Manitoba, or for the outdoor equivalent of a couch potato - IMHO - stick to layering if you want it for Active duty.

Down parkas are awesome to sit around camp with... I wouldn't hike with it on or I'd sweat to death.

Cap'n
I got your email. I'm not sure what I want to do yet. Since I have no training on glacial traversing yet, and after speaking to LtWtBkpkr, I'm thinking of going through the guide service at the moment. This will be something that I plan on doing next year, so there is plenty of time to think/plan for it.

Maple, Northern Mountain has a Golite Six month Night Polarguard 3D Parka on sale for $79. I just bought one and it's a nice coat for $79. Double layer with no sewn through seams and weigh 2 pounds.

Are you looking for a down jacket for in camp or something for on the trail use.

If you want a down jacket go for the overstocks at Lands End. They have down jackets for $39.50. A ton of us on here have them and like them quite a bit. Beats the hell out of over $100 for the same thing.

Hmmm... a good winter hiking jacket. Well, as for me and my household, I'm a proponent of using the layering system. I would make sure I had a good waterproof/breathable shell and then have varying layers of fleece or a down jacket. You start gettin' warm, simply shed a layer or two, if you are freezing cold, put on a big poofy down jacket, all fully protected from the elements underneath your super duper flipper dipper shell. I have spoken.

Mapie - I bought the Moostone Cirrus jacket. They have a hooded version. I have no idea how it's going to work for this winter, however, I've been in low temps with worse equipment. I have the Cirrus vest also, so I'll be using it as a layer. I also bought a 200 weight Fleece REI something or other at a REI garage sale for 3.00. It's wind stopper, so maybe a combo of all of these would work. The fleece is a little heavy, but the Moonstone stuff is real light weight! Layering is the key iffin you want some thing to hike in.

I see that at REI-outlet, they have a couple of sweet Moonstone jackets:

Moonstone Minimalist Down Jacket:

The one I have - Moonstone Cirrus Jacket:

http://www.rei.com/online/store/Search?stat=8265&langId=-1&storeId=8001&textQuery=moonstone

The whole listing:

I hate to be a Moonstone homey, but that shayt just ROCKS!!

Goretex XCR is awesome. I highly recommend a jacket made from it, if you can find it. I'm amazed at how well mine breathes. It can get very pricey though, keep an eye out for deals.

Maple it's just a question of when you wear it. When I'm in camp I wear everything. Thermals, fleece, down jacket, rain shell, gloves, hat.

On the trail I shed layers untill I don't sweat. (but I always sweat no matter what, I'm an inferno)

If I have to wear all of my layers on the trail to keep me warm then I'll be in trouble in camp.

I don't think that one is XCR, but little matter, the standard Gore-Tex does the trick as well, from what I've heard. I can only really speak for the Gore-Tex XCR though, since that's the only one I own. Good luck! :-)

I’m just guessing on this but, I think the gore-tex XCR is the new gore-tex that is suppose to be more flexible and less prone to cracking.
