Grant's Grove, summer/winter (warning: p ics!)

“Grant Grove is a grove of giant sequoias in Kings Canyon National Park. I stop there frequently as I continue on down into Kings Canyon road end. It's a really cool grove with a huge fallen walk-thru tree and many fatty sequoias all over the place. It's beautiful and I absolutely love these sequoia forests. There's a special awe I feel while walking amongst these towering giants. It's yet another one of my favorite places. Following are contrasting photos of the same areas, one in the winter, one in the summer. These aren't great shots or anything, I just love to share cool places.

I prefer going in the off-seasons and during storms when there aren't tourists around. If that doesn't work and there are still people around, I simply shoot them. If I'm feeling warm and fuzzy I'll shoot a warning shot right over their head first, maybe even wing 'em, but usually I just shoot them. Any other questions?”

Well, since we're on the Giant Sequoia theme! Here's a shot of a typical scene in a giant sequoia forest. I remember hiking through here and it seemed as though the trees were almost glowing red, they stood out so distinctly from the other conifers in the forest. Dang I love these forests! I found a great place to hike for many miles through these, with zippo crowds. We spent many hours hiking a loop through the Redwood Mountain Grove (or is it Redwood Canyon Grove, I forget?), and we never saw one other person the entire time. It was a really cool experience.

“Never in my adult life have I walked through a forest quite like that. I have some memories of visits to Sequoia NP and Redwoods NP as a small kid, but I will have to make the pilgrimage south (from Seattle)to see them again. I'm not sure it would be worth it if I had to see tourists, though... (just kidding)”
