Hang 'em high
WV panhandle residents warned
about rustlers
Grant County Farm Service Agency employee Mike Taylor knows all about a reported increase in cattle rustling in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle.

"I know about it first hand ... we lost 10 head back in September," explained Taylor.

Taylor talked about cattle rustling in wake of last week's announcement by the state Department of Agriculture. In that announcement, livestock producers were urged to take precautions against rustlers.

Commissioner of Agriculture Gus Douglass warned producers to be on the lookout for cattle thieves following reports of missing cattle in the Eastern Panhandle.

"Cattle prices have reached record levels and that may be tempting some individuals to take cattle that doesn't belong to them," said Douglass. "Farmers should double check all their gates to make sure they are locked."

Farmers should also be on the lookout for unusual vehicles and should report license plate numbers to local police if they spot suspicious activities. Sale managers should be alert for unfamiliar cattle sellers, Douglass added.

Cattle taken from the Taylor family were being pastured in the Williamsport area.

Wow. It looks like the government is on top of this and is taking action. "Make sure your gates are locked" Yea that will stop them. I bet the farmers are sleeping so much better because of such strong words.

Be looking for Sen. Byrd to introduce a new bill to combat this new scourge of "Cattle Rustling" in West Virginia...
