Aw c'mon Pepper It's only 1100 miles to Bishop from here
;-)

I love a good road trip. And, I get to stop in and visit some of my TT friends along the way, with any luck.

I guess with Slugman out, it's only me and LadyHiker coming from the north. Is that right?

Yo Hodge, when will you be passing through Sac?

BTW, I also enjoyed my 1000 mile drive to your neck of the woods back in Feb.

Hey Dunk - It was good to see ya over on the coast in Feb.

I'll be rolling into Sac around dinner time on Friday July 9, if all goes as planned. It would be great to hook up you guys again. Maybe you and Pepper can think of a place for us all to meet up.

Is anybody for this year's trip flying into Sac?

wingding....

yes....like blanche dubois i will be relying on the kindness of strangers (well, friends i haven't met yet, actually) to transport me to the trailhead....

i can rent a car if no one is able to pick me up....phil mentioned that he thought it might be best if i came in on friday night since saturday will be a travel day....

Gonzo: There are a few of us not too far from Ontario - I don't think hitching a ride will be a problem.

gonzo - wingding's right. Between her, Naviguesser and I we should be able to get you there. Last two years I carpooled with Nav. Three years before that I hauled Solitary or Mozark.

what kind of sleeping bags and tents are you all taking along on this trip??

is anybody going ultralight??

I'm bringing my usual Sierra hiking gear. A 20 degree bag and mylar blankie (now only good to 30 degree), sil-nylon tarp with mozzie netting. Fly rod and bear cannister. Running shoes, iodine, and liquor. I'm leaving the underwear at home so I guess that makes me an ultralighter. :)
Rockman

Ditto what Rockman said, except for the fly rod and the underwear. Well, maybe only one pair.

I'll be under 35 lbs at the start of the trip. In my pack I'll have: Bivy, 15 or 30 degree bag, two sleeping pads, rain jacket and pants, layer of fleece, light down jacket, extra shorts and t-shirt and long sleeve shirt, extra underwear, extra socks, (extra means more than what i'll be wearing), bear cannister, food, deet and head netting - bugs will be bad, sunscreen, lipgloss, soap, a paperback book, headlamp, camera, leatherman micra, gps, maps, hat, gloves, titanium pot, plastic spoon and cup, cannister stove, cannister and a few other things.
wingding04

I'm going lighter than I ever have before...40 lbs or less to start.

ULA P-2 pack
Waypoint 1 tent
Therm-a-rest LE 3/4 & chair kit
Pocket Rocket & 1 canister
pump type water filter

May buy a Bearikade Weekender to replace my Garcia and shave a few ounces.

I may buy a Mountain Hardware Phantom 15 or Phantom 32 ultralight down bag

I'm not bringing lip gloss.
Phil

I'll be bringing my Hilleberg Akto and a Marmot -9c bag.

I normally carry a sil tarp as well, up here in the PNW, but I may skip that for the Sierras, since we only saw one cloud last year. If we should happen to get a storm, I think there's enough of us that we could probably knock Rockman down and swipe his
;-)

However, the sil does make a nice simi-translucent sort of shower wall eh Navi
8^0

As always, I'll be carrying what appears to be a rediculous amout of food for one person. And, will need to borrow one of those pain-in-the-butt canisters to try and get half of it secured.

I will not be bringing running shoes, but could bring some lip gloss if you'd like to share Phil... hehehe

My son just signed up for this trip. I've lost track of permits. Does anyone still have a spot on their permit he could occupy?

I ordered a new ultralight sleeping bag...Mountain Hardware Phantom 15...Looks like a great
bag for compressing into a pack. Woohoo!

Two Rosenkrantz on the same trail ??!! This trips goin' ta Hell fast
;-)

Jeez Phil, you've been in a regular little gear buyin' frenzy.

Soooo we're supposed to be working out for this hike? Is there something you guys aren't telling me? Maybe I ought to actually look at the route in advance this year..... hehehe

Okay, I'm gonna start with a little 50 mile warm-up stroll down the West Coast Trail, on Vancouver Island next week. If you don't near from me again, it means I was either drowned in mud, or plucked from the rocks by a rouge wave

I think this one will be demanding at times. Some of us will be cross country for half the time: Ionian Basin and over Lamarck Col.

If my son goes I guess we will have to screen Nav's campfire questions for his young ears.

Is anyone thinking of camping near the trailhead the night before departure? Kind like what we did in Sequoia. You know, have some drinks...er, I mean acclimate.

Is there a campground nearby? A known secluded BLM area we could all congreate at?

I had fun last time.

Hodge, it should only be a bit tougher than last year. Heeeheeehee

Phil, I bet your son wouldn't be shocked by anything I have to say. He might even come up with some good answers. Besides, I'm working on some new questions for this year. 8^)

Rock, Yes there are campgrounds in the area of the trailhead. I'm going to be in Bishop over Memorial Day. I'll try to make some time to check out Group Sites, What do they cost? How many people do you need? Etc. And motels for our return festivities.

I've brewed up a batch of "Naviguesser Ale" for the pre / post hike parties.
It's a red ale with a good nose, a medium mouth combined with a complex malt tongue and a sweet after taste. 5% by volume. Rather pleasing if I do so myself. Given time to condition it should improve to be quite good by our kick off. IF there's any left by that time.

My son and I haven't backpacked together very much since Boy Scouts so I am hoping this works out.

i think i'm going to like it....it's a whopping 6 pounds lighter than my arcteryx bora 80....

I have a gregory Z pack on the way, but that will be too small.. I might opt for a whitney, or denali

gonzo - Great! I need to pack my new P2 and see how I do...new sleeping bag on the way also.

Son - I was referring to you getting the time off work and still having enough help at home while I'm gone.

Kelliforkili - Are you lurking about? I saw Teddi today. She will be at Fish Creek Saddle this summer again.

Trail name for Phil's son..... having one before this trip won't necessarily save you from this group assigning you one, but it might help... hehehe

Hodge - My son's trailname on other forums is "freeride" (He assures me it refers to a style of snowboarding...NOT to freeloading off of me like he has been doing for more than a quarter century).
