Yeah, Tekdude, that really is pretty much who I am . . . sincere and open. I like to straight up about most topics.

i find that i hear both types depending on who is there. there are some guys that will bring up girls/sex in every conversation and guys that keep that stuff to themselves. this is true wether out hikng or not. i prefer to talk about other things and get pretty quiet when it starts down that road.

Artex - You may be right. However, this Hispanic group was around in the 80's. And since the article(quote below) refers to "a big comeback," there must have been a demise.

Perhaps Buddha Bear will clarify.
In the last three years MENUDO has made a big comeback in various large Latin American countries, and still continues to expand it’s popularity once more after a period of reorganization, in which MENUDO has changed it’s artistic format and consists of members all speaking English as their first language.

I wouldn't mind talking about statistics once in a while, but there doesn't seem to be much interest.

I can't speak for everyone, of course, but I agree with several other posters above: I (and the guys I have hiked with) like to talk about backpacking-related stuff when backpacking. Or sports sometimes. I did talk running a fair amount with Aero while hiking w/him in Yoho. Talk about sex? Never. I would all the time with my guy friends when I was in high school, but I'm not that interested in sharing info with other guys now.

What I would really love to talk about with someone on the trail is statistics.

(pause)

Just kidding!

Then there are people like Krazy Kevin, who will talk endlessly about something, but we all kind of tuned out after about three solid days, so we have no idea what he was talking about....

Would a conversation about "Non-linear Programming Techniques" be sufficiently close enough? BTW, what is the probablity of us meeting on a trail?

Campin' Underfoot
Greasy slicked down body, groovy leather trim
I like the way you hold the road, mama, it ain't no sin

We talk about love

Trouble-free transmission, helps your oil's flow
Mama, let me pump your gas, mama, let me do it all

We talk about love

Dig that heavy metal underneath your hood
Baby, I could work all night, believe I've got the perfect tools

We talk about love

A model built for comfort, really built with style
Specialist tradition, mama, let me feast my eyes

We talk about love

Factory air-conditioned, heat begins to rise
Guaranteed to run for hours, mama it's a perfect size

We talk about love

Groovin' on the freeway, gauge is on the red
Gun down on my gasoline, I believe I'm gonna crack a head.

We talk about love
We can't stop talkin' about...

Come to me for service every hundred miles
Baby, let me check your points, fix your overdrive

We talk about love

Fully automatic, comes in any size
Makes me wonder what I did, before we synchronized

We talk about love

Feather-light suspension, coils just couldn't hold
I'm so glad I took a look inside your showroom doors

We talk about love
We can't stop talkin' about love.

I gotta go hiking with you. If you're willing to talk with a social scientist!

I'm working on a paper to advance the model from my dissertation. (By the way, I'm a late bloomer--AARP is knocking at my door--even though I finished my dissertation in Dec. 2003.) Your math/statistical training is likely beyond me but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Best,

Looks like the whole gamut has been pretty laid out here. As for myself, I guess I relate mostly to a combination of Newgirl's answer and what Stump said about topics you would talk about at a party. Like in any setting, my flow of conversation is whereever the it's going. If it is something I don't know much about, I tend to shut up and try to learn something by listening. If I have experience in the matter, then I try to add what I have to offer to it. Sometimes, it's just impromptu joking and/or 'mental masturbation' type topics. Anything goes if you are open minded and with people who are the same...

February has the best hike of the year with 23 people signed "yes" already.

Stumprider, are you still in the Chicago area? And, Phil,, do you have any travel plans during December? Just asking you two gents in case we can meet somewhere. I'm planning to leave Florida on December 4th and drive to Minnesota. I'll be returning, leaving Minnesota on December 19th and Iowa on the 20th. Why? Don't know if you been following some of my posts, but it's reunion time with My Old Flame.

LOL - Nowslimmer - I am booked at home during December unless I want to cancel my 30th Anniversary in January.

Ocala sounds like fun, but it is a little far to go for a weekend. I am already committed to a Boy Scout Merit Badge Day that weekend anyway.

Pepper - I don't think it would bother me to go on a TT hike with all females if it happened that way by chance. I don't think the conversation would be a problem.

"... but I have to...get a pedicure ..."

No problem! You can get one at The Spa located at my health club. Following that we could have a good workout, do a few miles around the indoor track, swim a couple of miles, hit the steam bath and/or Jacuzzi, and then attend class for a couple of hours. Then, after the sauna and a shower, we'll be ready to hit the trail and join the others.

Your company will be welcome.

sex. WOmen we've had sex with. Women we wished we had had sex with when we had the opportunity.

Women we would like to have sex with.

Women we never would have next with.

Women on the trail who "I spotted first", and who would definetly like to have sex.

Whether or not its true that French Canadian women f. like minxes (this is ususally most relevant when hiking in the ADK).

I regret to say that in more recent years way too much of our conversations have been about children, our parent's failing health, work etc etc etc.

I long for the single topic focus!
