Bowlerman, cool article. Good for Clyde. Bad for Starr. Just imagine what Independance or Mammoth was like back then.

When I hiked the JMT, the Bible was Starr's Guide to the JMT, a little red book dedicated to Starr. The other person in the article, Norman Clyde, was very famous among mountaineers. Some cherished moments were when we would climb a remote Sierra peak, and find a makeshift register that had an entry by Norman Clyde. One said that he had climbed the peak we were on (Tunnabora) in the winter, on skis.

Yeah, those guys must have been pretty amazing - I suspect they would have chuckled at the gear and clothing that we think of as "required" these days....

Great story, thanks for posting the link. Inspiring...

Guys like Starr and Clyde, Shackleton, Lewis and Clark ... are there people like them today? Few, and far between.

Snwburd was just up there, and helped put a 43 lb plaque up by Michael Minaret

I've been reading Snwburd's trip reports and I think he's pretty hardcore.

Wow, that trip report was quite different from most of mine!
