I think the headcount is upwards of 2,000,000 now. I think we'll make the news.

We'll be the biggest city in SE TN for a day or two!

Unless the weather is going to be really bad. We will probably be there. I expect however, we will base camp and day hike.

Aw, come on chili, it's only 25 miles in three days!

Well, bp, that would be 25 miles in three days with all my gear; all cottonsocks snacks; all the girls gear; and probably a game boy snuck in my pack.

Last two trips with kids, I averaged about 65 pounds,,,,,without beer.

Nope, no backpacking for the girls until they can carry something.

Oh. That's different.

Savage Falls is good for that basecamping thing!

I'll probably be basecamping as well. Was planning on baseing at Collins West on Friday when I arrive. I'm thinking the terrain is too much for my yunguns.

But we're gonna get bagnights by gosh!

How young, Roam?

Girl is 9, boy is 12. They've been bping before and do ok on light mileage (the boy could hack just about anything though).

We'll plan on dayhiking, but make the decision once I see the place. I don't want to burn my daughter out before she gets old enough to really get out.

Just read your reply, Roam.

The distances might be a bit much for your 9yrold, but the trails we're taking Saturday and Sunday look pretty flat. Your 12yrold could probably handle it no prob.

No, no puppy this time. We ended up sending him off to live on a farm out in the country. Our apartment was becoming a little small for him and he was very unhappy when we're gone.

:(

I haven't checked out a real good map, except online. If it's fairly flat we might try it out. I'm sure the big kid could do it - he's pretty gung ho about another big trip.

The only spot on the map that would give me pause for your 9yrold is a place called "Boulder Crossing" on the Collins Gulf trail. Everything else on the Collins Gulf and South Rim trails looks pretty flat.

Honestly though, it's the distances that worry me. My daughter is almost 9, and on any hike longer than a mile, she's complaining and needing to stop for a break. I can't imagine taking her on the 5.5 miles hike from Collins West to the Stage Road campsite. But if you think your daughter is up to it, she can probably do the hike with no problems.

She does pretty good, on any good uphill climb she whines and gets tired. We might be slow, but I'm not worried about her doing 5.5 miles - we did a little over 6 this weekend on a dayhike. It was a heckuva climb and that kicked her butt (almost got mine). Once we made the top and started back down she was good!

Do the Savage Gulf creeks flow year 'round or do they dry up in winter?

Can be dry in winter, but Father Goose and I were able to get water at Collins West last year this time. Don't know about Stage Road campsite though. Rain is forecast for the week preceding this trip, so creeks and springs may be full.

Water can be found year-round at Savage Gulf, but it can get pretty dry in the summer. I did basically the same hike we're doing a couple of Christmases ago after it had been raining for 5 days. The creeks had turned to raging rivers and the falls were awesome.

The worst campsite for water that I've been at was Sawmill. If the creeks are dry, then you have to hike half a mile to Schwoon Spring, then hang upside down with your Nalgene on a line to get water. Well, it's not that bad, but you do have to hike a while to get water, lol...

It looks like we'll have more than the 24 tent max for both nights. Does anyone see this as a problem? I've never been and don't know how aggressive the rangers are.

If it's like most trips, many will sign up, but few will come.

If it's a real problem, I can bring my Clip Flashlight 2 instead of my Light Year. I bet I can get yam and embear in that thing with me, lol...
