For those of you that are hiking in Saturday morning, what time do you plan to be there?

Are you ready for some wild Boars?
I am and remain the Dodder and yes I will be joining you all this weekend. Just don't know when? For sure Friday night but might get off Friday and be able to hike in with you Friday morning. Can't wait to see you all. Do I need to make nametags again? If so, bring a little prize and we will have fun drawings again. Father Goose can I sleep with you?

Dodder, you crazy bastage, I'm glad to hear you're comin' along!!! No, you can't sleep with me, there's not enough room in the hammock. Besides, I gave stovestomper two pigs for embear (I hear she's small). Of course, if Mother G shows up on Friday, I may have to forsake embear, in which case I will hold a raffle.

BTW, I still think that you should change your name to HogWild (in honor of Crazy Mike, of course!!!).

Packrat ain't gonna be able to make it.
I'm now a "maybe" for Monday. I'm going to play it by ear. We've had a ton of stuff to do at work so I'll see how busy we are.

I had one vote of 3 miles and one of 12 miles for the distance by road of Collins to Savage Station. Do we have a third vote?

Walkindude, don't it just suck when life gets in the way of trips?

John Lennon Quote, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." I hope I didn't butcher that too bad by doing it from memory.

3 miles, 12 miles... if you're in the car, what does it matter? <GRIN>

BTW -- what's a good town or zip code to feed into the weather channel website for a forecast?

The reason I'm curious is that it effects what time I need to arrive to stow gear with you or MM on Friday morning. On those curvy roads 12 miles could take 30 minutes.

I went to Mapquest a few days ago and zoomed in all the way... the 'jeep roads' were a little curvey getting in the last mile, but the asphalt looked pretty straight, <G>

I need to just zoom in on MS Trips planner and let it do the route and see what the answer is.

Assuming I picked the correct points on the map it said 6.8 miles and 15 minutes.

Wow, weather.com shows 10% chance of rain on Sat and accuweather.com shows 10 hrs of rain on Saturday. Bit of a difference isn't it?

Sooooooooooooooooo plan on a 100% chance for half the time? LOL       I just plan for a nearly frozen flood this time of year, and I'm disappointed only rarely.

Since Collins West is so close to the road is there any theft concerns during the day Friday? This is something that doesn't even cross my mind among backpackers, but with the campsite so close we may not be dealing with backpackers. If Tilt, MM, and I leave all our stuff in camp for the whole day while we hike to it then should we be concerned?
dayhiker

I was thinking about the same thing. I don't know. You might try calling the rangers and see what they say, although they will likely tell you not to leave your stuff there. It's a big woods though, and plenty of places to hide your pack.

Not kidding.

I would offer but I have a tentmate. :)

Does that interferre with YOUR work plans for monday...I can take you all the way home on monday, so chilibater will not have to pick you up anywhere.

Is Savage Gulf in bear country? I assume the answer is no, but you know what happens when you assume.

There's no bear warnings there. If there was a bear problem, the warnings would be all over the place, given that people camp there all the time and leave their food out all over the place. I rarely see people even hanging their food bags there.

That's what I thought. I thought the same thing before I went to Arkansas. I did a search before going to the Ozarks and found that Arkansas has about 5x as many bears as Tennessee and maybe 1/2 as many as NC. That was a shocker.

Where is everyone staying saturday and sunday night? I could get up there Saturday night and hike in if it was close( but Im not wild about night hiking) or I could stay in the truck that night and try to hook up with everyone sunday.

Saturday night we're at Stage Road...a little far for a night hike in, which you're not supposed to do anyway. I don't know where the people who are planning on camping Sunday night are gonna be.

Stage Road is about 6 miles from the trailhead.

ALERT
Okay, my brother just left me a message and told me that they are still doing some work at Stage Road and would not likely hold all of us. Also, they are not allowing campfires there. He said that the Dinky Line is usually less crowded, but that there is a tough ranger in charge there and that we absolutely should not do anything that would get us in trouble. His phone was cutting in and out, so I am waiting for a call back to get more info.
