“A forecast 30 days ahead? I wouldn't hang my hat on that one. The furthest ahead I've seen forecast has been 15 days on accuweather.com. Where did you get a 30 day forecast?”

“I haven't used a tent in about 2 years. I guess I could dig one up if it's really cold. How much does it add temp wise? Maybe 5*? How much warmth does a bivy add?”

“Keeps the wind off ya too...last time I tarped, I managed to pitch the tarp so that the wind could blow right through it. Chilly....”

“I think I read somewhere that a tent is 10 degrees warmer than the ambient temp.”

I'm thinking I might just buy a new tent for winter camping. The TarpTent did fine for 14 degrees at TCII, but the wind didn't blow.
om had a pretty good looking tent she got at REI. Have to ask her which one it was again.”

“I'm looking forward to this one as well. It looks like I'll meet about 10 new faces. I'm one degree of seperation from all of you through MDS. He and I were in Sipsey this past weekend. He was shocked that I hadn't met bit, FG, Ewker, yam, and embear. MDS and I have hiked together about 6 or 7 times. This will be my first TT hike with lots of folks. TC2 wasn't a hike, so I don't count that one. Met lots of cool people though.”

“The other thing about TC2, SS, is that I sandwiched (2) 20* bags and (2) ground pads. When you only have to walk 100 yards you can take half the world with you.

This weekend MDS and I didn't have but a mile and a half to our basecamping location. I took (2) groundpads, my campmor 20* bag, my 40* down quilt(homebuilt), beer in bottles (Yuengling), chunky soup in can for lunch, Italian sausage, hd buns, horseradish mustard, and lots of other goodies. I ate, drank, and slept quite good. Heck, I can take all that for 8 miles so I don't need to worry.

I'm actually more concerned about rain. I use ProVent which is similar to Frogg Toggs. I just don't know how well it'll perform in the wet AND cold.”

“I hope I can make it. My left knee is still recovering from my last BP trip...it sucks to get old! But it'd be great to break in that new 0F degree bag and MSR Miox that's coming my way for Christmas. ”

“My winter pad combo is a 24" wide x 6' long x 3/8" thick closed cell foam pad and a thermorest 3/4 ultralite on top of that. Add a WM Antelope 5 degree bag and I'm set.
My rain gear is much the same as yours. I have a plastic $1 poncho I can use if the provent wets thru.”

“My rain gear was a five finger discount.”

“My ground pad is the same except a guidelight. I was cozy warm last weekend in the 20* down and 40* quilt. That quilt actually lofts up 3". This time next year I might make a 0* bag. I enjoyed making the quilt. I figured out that I can make a 0* bag that weighs 2#5oz and cost about $180. It would take about a weekend to do. A comparable bought bag would be 350+ and not near as fun.”

“I wish I had the patience for that.”

“IMO, the extra half-inch of the Guidelite is worth the extra three ounces...”

“I pretty much chuck the ultralight out the window for cold weather backpacking. I'll be using my 25+ yo 4 # frame pack rather than the GoLite. Lots and lots of warm clothing. I'll look like I'm still in my sleeping bag with all the down coats and vests I'll be wearing in camp.”

“CMB and I will be wearing shorts.”

“I should get me one of those down parkas or something for winter. Although, to be honest, never been cold around a Father Goose campfire, lol...”

“Yep, a FG campfire can be seen from space.”

“WK...the last time I was around a Father Goose campfire was in Savage Gulf last January. We found some pretty big deadfall and he sawed that up into logs which we ended up going through. Our water was freezing in our Nalgenes, but we were nice and toasty around that fire.”
