I have a Gregory Lassen adn love it but want to lighten my load down to at least 4 lbs.

I'd like it to take me from summer to winter. want a shovel pocket, ice axe loops... andy suggestions?

i've been looking at the new mountainsmith chimera and also TNF Prophet 65

Kelty Satori 4700 is an awesome pack. I have 3 packs and it is my fav. Used to swear by my Gregory Petite Dru, and it is a good pack, but it weighs 7 lbs empty! The Kelty has removable side pockets and a mesh back pocket that doubles as a day pack. Bear cannister fits just fine. I had it on my last 8 day trip and it was great. (I also have a Dana Designs Bridger that I use for summer weekends, too small for winter or long trips, so probably not what you want). All these packs fit me great, but I had to go through alot of frogs before I met these princes. I don't know if you are male or female, but the Satori comes in womens sizes, too. I recommend it highly.

BB - will the beavertail fit any pack or does it have to be a Dana Designs pack?

I'm leaning towards the mountainsmith chimera...@ $169 and only 3 lbs 7 oz, it looks pretty enticing to me, plus, the torso will adjust 15-20 (more my size than the TNF Prophet).

What do you think?

Yep -- I thought I saw the Chimera in the STP catalog.

I got the men's version a few months ago (the Auspex). It's a nice pack, but no shovel pocket ---

The BeaverTail Shovit(no pun intended) should fit most packs. The attachments are universal, and very adjustable. Obviously, mine fits my DD pack perfectly, however, for $15, it's prolly worth a try.

I've been able to stuff both my snowshoes and shovel in the Shoveit, in addition to my full pack. It's sooooooo nice, and worth the 15 bones.
