Or if she was near a waste disposal facility (or something of the sort) then she could easily make a body disappear

Mapleleaf probably fed her body to the animals at the rescue shelter.

FINE!
then I will ask a real question.

how come you do not offer email accounts like other websites?

I would like mine to be

Mapleleaf@thebackpacker.com

cool right?

I did at one time, but the costs were too high to justify keeping them.

Cool, but a legal liability plus something that can drain resources fast. You start supplying email addresses for a domain and you either need a supplier that can handle email redirection OR you must operate your own email server. Plus anyone that starts using your domain (thebackpacker.com) to send out spam or nasty emails causes you pain and/or money when you have to deal with that. Its a whole other can of worms.

I own several domains where I could offer email addresses to my users - I already use a service that allows email redirection to user's real email accounts - but the legal and maintanence issues have prevented me from doing it. The other side, operated by a large corporation with $, can get around this crap.

All of this applies to users you don't know, like here. I do offer email addresses to friends and family; only people I know.

My 2 cents.

Matt - if you use a redirection service the cost is nil. I use redirection.net and have for 5 years. Good service, and only costs $18 a year.

Don't do it Matt. Maple will just use it to spam out animal porn.

Free Email Cancellation
“As of April 30, 2001 the free email service provided by thebackpacker.com will be discontinued. At that time, all free email accounts will be deleted and the service will be taken down. This decision comes after a lengthy evaluation of how best to strengthen the community within thebackpacker.com. The free email service requires a lot of resources and there are many other free email providers on the Internet. While many people use the email service, it did not increase the integrity of thebackpacker.com community in ways we had hoped for. Therefore, we feel it is best to redirect the resources used for the email service into other areas of the website. Over the next few months there will be many changes made to thebackpacker.com website, all in hopes of strengthening the community of hikers that have been drawn to thebackpacker.com. We hope to increase the quality of the content, the number of users, and the community atmosphere that surrounds thebackpacker.com. Thank you for using the email service and please continue to support thebackpacker.com.”

Matt, could you set up a device that responds to "I'm leaving TT" threads with a "Don't let the door hit you in the ass message?"

I'm thinking 100 points bold Swiss Black.

There have been a lot of people who wished I'd leave. They all left instead. That's my goal ... to have TT all to myself.

(OPIE) how about if you post a leaving TT thread, the system deletes your user name, and password, and won't let you reassign it. lol

I like it. It let's me know when I've hit the end of the thread.

now here's something I was thinking about...how hard would it be to have private messaging here? I think it'd be great because if I want to contact someone on TT I have to leave the site. A private messgae box would mean we'd be doing all that clicking on YOUR SITE. We win, you win.

Maple, use the "back" button on your browser instead of the "back to Trail Talk main page" link at the end of the thread, and you'll stop hitting the ad so much.
