I had giardia once and will never drink unfiltered water again (short of a life or death situation which I will try my hardest to avoid).

Worst backpacking experience? Taking someone out for three days who b!tched and whined every step of the way.”

“When I'm out trout fishing in the streams it's pretty common to find dead animals right in or next to the water. I've seen deer, birds, fish and raccoons, etc. dead in the water. On smaller creeks water can be flowing right through a dead deer while you are filling your water bottle downstream and you wouldn't know it.”

Actually, in the 10 years I had paddled through Quetico Provincial Park, I never once filtered and never once got sick. As long as you don't drink in the shallows or near beaver damms, you should be fine.”
