“So while freaking out about finals and senior thesis and other BS college #&%!$ that goes on towards the end of the semester... I contemplated suicide (I'm seriously just joking) but I was curious if it is really impossible to hold your breath until you die?”

Two students at my daughter's college commited suscide last year. The school has taken action to try to prevent more suscides.

There are a number of articles available on the subject, suicide in colleges and universities.

ScorchFire, I believe you are totally being silly...yet I must say that in most settings, joking about suicide is as well accepted as joking about a bomb when you are on an airplane.

It does hit close to home for so many people, and there are too many cases where no one had a clue...no matter how gregarious, etc. a person is, people can hide a lot of pain behind all kinds of masks. You know this better than I do.

So, I don't mean to lecture...

I work with people who were depressed/psychotic and who have killed themselves, so I know it's not a joking matter... I really didn't mean to poke fun at suicide.

However, I really was curious if you could hold your breath long enough for you to die. Just one of those "I wonder" questions.”

Our autonomic system regulates our breathing--we do have some control of our breathing (we can hold our breath) however your brain tells your body to breath. Some mammals such as whales and dolphines are considered conscious breathers--their brain does not tell their body to automatically breath. Because of this dolphines only sleep half of their brain at once, the other half of their brain is used to watch for predators and go to the surface to breath. If you, the unconscious breather attempts to hold your breath until you die, you will simply pass out and your autonomic system will take over and resume breathing. I guess that anatomy and physiology class was good for something.”

“Fritz hit the nail on the head. I have known 4 people who have committed suicide in my lifetime. Two of them were very close to me and the other two, not as tight with. The one thing I found through this is that none of them ever talked about it. And the two close ones that actually did it...

On the other side of the coin, I have been around some folks who HAVE mentioned this and, although they might have been in a depressed state, never did it and I don't believe ever will. Perhaps, in their cases, it is a cry for attention or something like that.”

“my best friends mother has "tried" a couple of times. i dont think they were real attempts, more along the lines of cry for help. shes a nurse. she knows enough about human physiology to succeed if she really wanted to.

i just talked to scorch on the telly, shes fine. nothing to see here. move along. just nicotine withdrawal and end of semester blues.

she admitted to me that she was smoking. AGAIN. and was smoking this past weekend.

I'm sorry about your friends, Stu. I can't even begin to imagine the pain they were going through to take their own life.

I'm sorry to bring up such a sore spot for anyone where this hits close to home. I obviously wasn't thinking and was in the midst of an "end of the semester" fit.

I have known three individuals that have taken their own lives. One by hanging another by gunshot and another by OD. The two former where guys with troubled female relationships and the latter a darling female. What a waste.

Most of these took place while H.S. or just after.”

“It's that time of year, all right...we've had 6 suicide attempts in my rescue squads area in the last 2 weeks. Probably a combination of S.A.D. and pre-holiday stuff, who knows? Only 2 of 'em were successful, one of which was last night when a young guy hung himself. Not a pretty sight.

My mother did that when I was only 2 years old, so I never knew her. She was a messed up person to do that. It may be why my internal instincts have me dating messed up women now.

“They used to hold exams in the art gallery at my school and they used to cover up one of the pictures as over the years two students had try to kill themselves in front of it.
Or so the myth went anyhow. They did always cover it up just at exam time though ;o)”
