STROUD TOWNSHIP — It will be at least a week before authorities know whether or not bones found in woods near the Appalachian Trail will solve a 15-year-old mystery.

A man looking for his lost dog Monday morning found the skeletal remains about 200 yards off the trail in Stroud Township, off Route 191 near the Northampton County border.

Police on Tuesday returned to the site where the remains were discovered to search for clues, said Richard Wolbert, a detective with Stroud Area Regional police.

They canvassed the area using metal detectors and other equipment.

Authorities are certain the remains are human, but they are still trying to determine the gender, age and race of the deceased, as well as how long the bones have been in the woods, Wolbert said.

There was widespread speculation Tuesday that the remains might be those of Carl R. Daub, who is suspected of killing his wife, Myra, with a claw hammer in their Whitehall Township home on May 31, 1988.

The same day his wife was killed, Daub's wrecked car was found in the woods off Route 191 about a half-mile from the site where the bones were discovered Monday.

Daub has not been seen since.

His case has been profiled on national television shows and the Internet.

Daub was 65 at the time he disappeared and would be 80 if alive now.

A forensic anthropologist from Utica, N.Y., will arrive in the Poconos later this week to help officials identify the dead person, Wolbert said.

The expert will "look at the skeleton and put most of it back together," Wolbert said, adding that it will take at least several days before a positive identification can be made.

Police recovered several teeth, a green shirt, a pair of blue pants and a belt near the bones at the site, but those items are not enough to determine whether or not the remains are Daub's, according to Wolbert.

"There was no identification found," Wolbert said, adding that he spoke with one of Daub's sons and with Whitehall police. "Sure it could be him, but we have no way to tell right now."

The clothing will be sent to the Pennsylvania State Police crime lab for analysis, police said Monday.

Daub was a decorated World War II veteran. He was among a handful of American soldiers who survived the infamous "Malmedy massacre" in Belgium's Ardennes Forest during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.

He had reportedly been treated for medical and psychological problems at Veterans Administration hospitals.

If that dude was a Malmedy massacre survivor, that explains why he went off the wall.

One of my friends found an abandoned car near their farm. The car belonged to an elderly man who grew up in the area, but had moved away. The dogs tracked the man to a creek that runs across their property, but never found him. This area is remote and in the middle of the National Forest. I expected a hunter to find his body.

It has been several months and the old man never has showed up. My theory is that he was going to commit suicide and wanted to do it near his boyhood haunts. I may do a little bushwhacking this winter to see if I can find the remains.

Apparently the story goes that this dude (not yet determined if it is truely him) Bludgeoned his wife to death with a hammer in 1999, split the since and had a car acident on the hill by the AT (near the Kirkridge shelter) that same night and after the accident fleed the since of that, only to disappear and never be seen again.

only thing I can't figure out is why they didn't use dogs to track him???

and I thought you southern's were stupid. Looks like the fruit doesn't fall to far from the tree after all.

Hey Geo - they found this guy near the Kirkridge Shelter. Now I know why we were told not to drink the water when we stayed there last year.

Geez Pete, they did a massive manhunt for this guy when he disappeared. How the heck did they NOT find him if he died right under their noses?

I'm going out on a limb and say it's not this guy. Hmmmmm... I wonder if it's that guy named Brian who was supposedly stalking women on the AT in that area?

If they found clothing, it can't be that old guy can it? Clothes would last 15 years out in the elements like that?
