Deer Blamed For Three Deaths On Interstate
11:43 a.m. EST December 1, 2003 - Three people were killed after a fiery crash on Interstate 83 on Monday north of York, Pa.
State police in York County said the accident began when two deer crossed the highway near Strinestown and were hit by a car at about 4:30 a.m.
The York County coroner's office said it may take some time to confirm the victims' identities because the fire was so severe.
A state police spokeswoman said the sedan was about 10 miles south of Harrisburg when it struck the deer, then lost control and hit a cement barrier. A tractor-trailer then hit the car, which caught fire.
The state game commission has warned motorists to be on the lookout for deer as the two-week rifle-hunting deer season gets under way Monday.

This morning as I was about to leave for work just has dawn was breaking the sound of BOOM, BOOM, BOOM could be heard in the section of Delaware State Forest that is about 200 yards from my house, signaling opening day. Then I drove through another section of the state forest where the sides of the road was crowded with parked vehicles and orange figures were seated on rocks with rifles in hand 100 feet from the road.

Now that the rifle deer season has started the deer start going in places they normally wouldn't. There have been deer in my backyard at night a few times in the past couple of weeks. We haven't had a deer in the yard since in decades that I noticed. To get here they have to cross two sections of busy highway, but some come under a narrow bridge about 1 mile from here. They're the smart ones, I guess. Maybe they know nobody will shoot at them once they cross the highway.

I was thinking about that just the other day... with so many deer collisions we have on state roads around here, it's a wonder there aren't more on the nearby interstate.

On one of my fall trips, there must have been about a dozen deer carcasses along the Pa. Turnpike, and about as many more blood stains.

One was hit across from my brother's place. The deer was still alive, so some local came along to dispatch it. It took him six shots. That boy seriously needs target practice!

Isn't it past time we exterminate all wildlife in non-wilderness areas?

I so much wanted to go hiking this past weekend, but when I heard about one guy shooting and killing a member of the same hunting party because he wasn't wearing blaze orange, and I didn't have any blaze orange I stayed with the (ho-hum) inlaws.

(I even got to go to the "Fuzzy Pig!" No it's not a bar.)

That's a pretty harsh reaction just beacause he wasn't wearing orange.

Either the hunting was good near Lumberville Pa. Sunday or the guy doing all the firing was a lousy shot. I've been on quieter firing ranges!

From what I saw on the local news tonight the hunting locally wasn't too good. Hunters were complaining of the high winds and lack of snow cover. This years antler restrictions, I would think might make the hunting safer. A hunter would have to count antler tines to be sure the buck was legal before squeezing the trigger.

We have a 3 point rule in Arkanas. There has to be three points on one side of the antler for it to be a legal buck. Doe hunting is by permit only.
