The actual peak is Sunday morning (~7 AM EST ± 2.5 hours), but.... the Moon (~3/4 full) rises about 9:45 PM.

Still, the radiant rises about sunset, so there should be some shooting stars the first part of Saturday night until the Moon gets too bright. The folks at the IMO characterise the Geminids as, "a splendid stream of often bright, medium-speed meteors, a rewarding sight for all watchers."

Yeah- should be nice. I'll be on Whale Peak in Anza Borrego. I hope it's clear Saturday night.

Back to the top --- a reminder for the Evening Shift.

I hope it's as clear as it was an hour ago. I was at the lake this afternoon and after the sun set, it was Killer Clear. The galaxy came out big as life and twice as ugly from one horizon to the other, along with the Double Cluster, M-31... et cetera.... and 5 or 10 sporadic meteors.

Just checked the forecast, and I'm totally screwed... AGAIN. 70% chance of rain Saturday night.

Hey! I'll be 3 for 3... The Leonids, the lunar eclipse and now the Geminids. I might as well be in Seattle.

Maybe it (3200 Phaethon) is just tired?

I'm starting to think Augusta is cursed for viewing cool astronomical events. The only thing I've tried to view that had clear skies was a tandem orbit of the ISS and the Columbia space shuttle a mission or two before it burned up. That tandem orbit is something I'd like to see again if they ever get the space shuttle program back on track. Now if I could just see a meteor shower ever again...

Yeah, I think we're cursed. (The fact that it's the 13th isn't helping either, I don't think, LOL)

O Well.... Sunny and clear the day before and the day after --- Par For The Course around here. Here's the meteor calendar for next year, just in case the weather cooperates....

At least there are more sporadics this time of year, so anytime you get a clear sky, you ought to see a few.

And if you can see the sun glint off of a 3-foot dish in orbit, that ISS/Shuttle combo ought to be a piece of cake.

I saw several last night when I was hanging with the scouts. Very cool. They were all bright blue-green.

Velly Intellesting...

I just checked the calendar and Next Year the Moon is new on the 12th, so that's a little good news.
