LOL I was going to drag a large boulder home from the beach the other day, for just that purpose, twigeater. My dog was trapped in a bedroom as the wind blew the door shut, his incredi-bladder allows him to go 12-16hrs w/o urinating, but to be trapped without water is another situation entirely

I woke up to the sounds of a puking ferret this morning. She's okay now, though.

The cricket that was chirping like hell and keeping me awake went silent about 2 am.

hmmmmmm. Coinzadenza?

I had to pull the plug on a wet hike down West Fork Canyon at Sedona. I stayed up late Friday night getting ready, packed, etc. Cooked up some potatoes that I’m pretty proud of for the after hike pot luck. About 10 AM Friday at work some bug came over me, aches, fever, chills, etc. I left work and was genuinely worried about getting home. I’ve never had anything hit me that fast or hard. It really put me down, still feeling like crap today. I so seldom get sick at all. Maybe that's why I’m whining so much. I’m thankful it didn’t happen 5 miles into the trip, West Fork is a slot and there is no bailing out.

Anyone ever gotten sick on a hike/back pack? What did you do?

Day 6
So, what's everyone's cold medicine of choice?

I started with a severe sore throat last week and a trip to the dr. No strep throat, "just a virus" they say, but I get it every year around this time. Its got to be allergy related. It totally wipes me out. THen, it turns into a cold and lasts a week. It sucks!!

But, what do you all take for your cold symptoms? Dayquil doesn't seem to be helping me a whole lot.
smiley girl

Chicken soup and whiskey.

No, not together.

Well, the chicken soup, anyway.

Actually, I take something with some pseudoephedrine in it to dry up my sinuses, and also some ibuprofen to take care of body aches, etc. I don't know what dayquil has in it, but I've taken it as well. If it has acetaminophen (Tylenol) in it, it may not be taking care of your aches and pains as well as ibuprofen would.

If it has dextromethorphan HBr, that can make you very sleepy.

Take a zinc tablet once a day too.

You need some pseudoephedrine...it'll dry up your nose and perk you up. I might make you nuts as well (I get a little excitable when I take it) but tradeoffs is tradeoffs...

Sneezy and runny sounds more like a need for an antihistamine. I'd try that. There's good old benadryl if you don't mind the drowziness and claritin and such if you don't mind feeling like a dried prune.
treebait

Claritin has done nothing for me the last few days. Dayquil must have the pseudo stuff in it...I think that's what kept me awake most of the night. Tonight, I'll buy some Nyquil!!

bitpusher

These days, nyquil also contains pseudoephedrine, since they banned phenylpropanolamine back in 2000. Nyquil contains the antihistamine to knock you out.

Chicken Soup Recipe... & other remedies
I've used euchanesia (sp?) to help ward off a cold when I first start to get a little "sneezy"... It helps to boost the immune system a bit!

Other things for a cold--

a shot of whisky with lemon juice and honey-- kind of like an old fashioned cough syrup... knocks you out and you'll sleep well. I guess it's due to the alcohol and the vitamin C....

If you are already sick, a home-remedy that my mom used to make a "healing" chicken soup:

Ingredients:

Fresh, whole chicken (amish chicken is best-- make sure it doesn't have added "broth solution" injected or the flavor won’t be the same.)

Kosher or other large grain salt.

Fresh ginger root, (about a table spoon-- chopped up or in thin slices)
3 scallions - chopped up, including the green and white parts except the little roots-- it's roughly about 3-4 table spoons
Dried Chinese Dates (about 1/2 cup-- these are kind of reddish in color--find them at an Asian grocery store,
Ginseng slices - about 1 table spoon
1 cups of water
1 cup of white wine
Sesame oil (about 2 tablespoons)

Ground black pepper (to taste)
Regular Salt to taste.

Cooked short grain White Rice (not instant!)

1) Remove the giblets from the chicken before you begin

2) Rub kosher salt into the giblets and also all over the body of the chicken (both inside and outside.) Let rest for about 1 minute.

3) Rinse off all of the salt from the inside and outside of the chicken as well as the giblets. Make sure that you don't leave any residue or the chicken will be too salty when cooked.

4) Rub the chicken and giblets with the sesame oil, ginger, green onions and ginseng slices.

5) Put the chicken (and giblets) in a crock pot with the water, white wine and Chinese dates over the top of the chicken. Grate a bit of ground pepper on top of the chicken.

7) Turn the crock pot on low and let it cook all day or until the chicken is tender—(when poked with a fork, the juices should run clear.

** Note: the ginseng has a very strong, medicinal type of flavor. Discard it after the chicken is cooked. You can probably adjust it as needed. You can eat the dates or discard them as well if you wish.

This soup is very concentrated and the chicken is very flavorful when done. You can add additional water to make the broth a little thinner, or add some cooked white rice to make a chicken soup with rice.

Add additional salt and pepper after it is done cooking!

Enjoy! The ginger helps to sooth the stomach. The ginseng and dates are supposed to have healing properties as well. (of course the steam helps to open your sinuses…)

You can also make this recipe using 2 Cornish hens… very yummy!

Jeesh! That sounds like a lot of work to do while you're sick. Can I compromise by opening a can of chicken stock, and adding noodles and some leftover cooked chicken?? Maybe a carrot or two?

i think it's kind of fun to be slightly sick, but only if i can stay home from work!

LOL

Actually, it sounds alot more complicated than it is... The crock pot makes it a no fuss, no muss thing--

If you don't want to add the ginseng and dates, you can make a great crock pot soup by skipping those 2 ingredients and just upping the amount of ginger and green onions.
(although the ginseng is a primary "healing" ingredient.)
Also, you can use regular salt in place of the kosher salt.

Part of the secret really is in using fresh chicken--you can substitute chicken breasts or thighs for the whole chicken. Or you can even use wings and chicken necks/backs (if you don't want to eat the chicken, but want the benefit of the broth--just take it out and discard. But, it does need to have the skin attached-- that's where the flavor is.

You can also add carrots, onions and celery, too... :-)

But once you've tried a home-made chicken soup, you'll understand why it is so much better when you are sick (and tastes so good!)

Trust me, it's worth it!
