Well, we finally broke down and bought an artificial Christmas tree this year to save me from the various allergens a real tree brings. No more itchy eyes, but no pine smell, either. :-(

Your a wise man.....
I fought against the fake tree for years, finally I agreed to let the wife get one.

Man, I was a fool to fight it for so long...no more arguments trying to find the perfect tree, no more arguments over the price and best of all, no more allergies! Christmas is much nicer now...and the tree looks so real, most folks cant tell the difference.

I do miss the smell though......

Artificial trees are great, until you pull them out of storage in the garage or attic or wherever, and all the spiders and roaches who've made their homes in it come flooding out. They can also develop a fusty smell, and need to be taken outside and hosed down. But you have to guard while it dries, because a cat WILL find it and spray it for you so you have to start over again. Dogs like them, too.

LOL@treebait! Depending on what "SMELL" you're going for...(re: dog/cat/tree..) you can always buy those ornaments that you plug into your lights that give off the smell of a pine tree. Just a suggestion.

bought my first fake christmas tree here in the states. I guess I got used to it. I still do miss the smell though.

I always pictured the whole family going to pick out the christmas tree. Of course there must be snow and christmas lights... oh well... times change...

My wife bought a fake PRELIGHTED tree last year. All I do is drag the damn thing up from the basement, get it in the stand and it's all up to her from there.

Well, if you miss the pine smell, you can always hang one of those car air freshioners in the shape of a Christmas tree as one of the ornaments! Then you get no allergens and the smell!

It may not be a pine, but it's that fresh smell that everyone likes! Nonetheless, they ALL smell GOOD! And, there ARE ways of getting your fake tree to "smell" like a real one! :-)

I didn't have a tree for years real or fake. The last coupla years my grandkids have dug out this little fake thing I have that's about 2ft tall and decorate that for me. They think I have to have a tree, LOL.

Fake tree never!

We usually get about a 10-foot spruce or fir. We have a place close by where we go and cut it down fresh. The guy does it as a side job and he doesn’t advertise, so it’s the same few people coming back every year. 20 bucks for a beautiful 10-foot fresh cut tree, you can’t complain about that.

I thought they'd have an aerosol by now... That New Tree Smell.

We did have Scotch Pines when I was a kid. It seems like they were bushier than the Spruces or Firs today. It was a b!tch finding one witha straight trunk, tho'...

It's funny I get yelled at every year for putting some of the shorter branches down near the bottom of the fake tree. I like making a few bare spots; it makes the thing look a little more real.

We bought our first artificial tree a few years ago, at an after-Christmas sale at a decorating place. The thing is HUGE. Like 6 feet across at the base. When we moved into our current abode, it was too big for the living room, so my wife bought a smaller one and that's the one we use now. So I have two artificial trees.

A couple of days ago, my wife said something about the school needing a Christmas tree for a function, and that she'd like to lend them ours, but then we wouldn't have the tree up until nearly Christmas. I said "Dear, you could lend them the other one, you know, the HUGE one?" She looked at me and said, "Oh yeah, I forgot we had that one!"

When I was a kid, we'd just tromp into the vacant lot next to our house, find a likely cedar, saw it down and bring it back to the house. Always loved the smell of that cedar...

Two birds with 1 stone

Wash the accumulated mould, bugs, etc that the fake tree has picked up during its 11 months in the musty basement

with PINE SOL

Yaaay,

I would have a little trouble with a 10ft tree,

8 ft ceilings LOL

Like the artsy shot the best.

The only thing about fake trees is that they are perfectly uniform, which I really like. Plus they don't shed - especially when you take every thing down after the carnage has ended. Another plus.

Just my $.02, but I think it's the imperfections in a real tree that gives it its beauty and character. Look at mountains for instance; it’s the ones with the scared slopes that are more memorable.

Wow I think I just made this thread backpacking related.

Sorry, folks, but a fake tree is that way we go. We tried to get a real one......they cost too much per year. Around my area, they can be up to 35.00 fer a good tree. We did the tree farm thing, that was a mess. My inlaws gave us there new fake one and we put it up.......looks great! Now the wifie poo can enjoy Christmas without the Holiday allergies. We burn pine scented candels to get that smell in the air. It think it safer too! If ya leave the tree n a window, it can dry out real fast, even if ya water it everyday.

A good tree for 35 bucks?! Geez, a good one will run you at least 60-80 bucks around here! In fact, that made it a little easier to justify getting a fake one.

What's wrong with the nutcrackers, bit?! Next thing you know, you'll be grousing about all the Radko ornaments. At least I didn't show the Longaberger snowman-shaped basket holder in the shot....

Relating it to backpacking...
The live Christmas trees that are available around here come from Christmas tree farms in North Carolina. We drive by them on our way back and forth to bping trips in NC, TN, and Virginia. Our tree is like a little backpacking trip in our living room.

There you go. Now this is officially a backpacking thread. Please go on about your business.

In Shasta County....

When I was with SAR, we had a search for missing Christmas tree hunters almost every year...usually they were stuck in the snow.

I forgot that last year my mom put up a birch tree - who knows what she'll do this year. So I guess pine and cedar ain't so strange after all! Never thought of cedar though, I bet that'd be nice.
