From: Clinton criticizes Bush in Austin

AUSTIN -- U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., on Friday blasted President Bush and his "radical" administration for attempting to dismantle the "central pillars of progress in our country during the 20th century."

Clinton, in an interview with two reporters, said she had become convinced the Republican administration wants "to undo the New Deal," the Roosevelt-era policies that ushered in Social Security and a host of other governmental assistance programs.

She said Bush, who campaigned as a "compassionate conservative" in 2000, had taken a "hard-right turn to pursue an extremist agenda" after moving into the White House.

"I don't know where it came from, but the fact is that this President Bush has not only been radical and extreme in terms of Democratic presidents but in terms of Republican presidents, including his own father," she said.

Clinton, who later signed copies of her book Living History for hundreds of people waiting in line at a downtown Austin bookstore, continued to insist that she won't jump into the race for next year's Democratic presidential nomination.

But she said she believed that Bush was beatable because his administration was "making America less free, fair, strong, smart than it deserves to be in a dangerous world."

"We have to change direction before irreparable harm is done," she added.

im not taking sides, but i think if the two parties spent less time ripping on each other and more time actually leading this country, maybe we'd be a little better off.

Billary had a Chair on the Armed
Services committee.That gave her
the plebiscite to visit Afghanistan. I watched for 10 minutes this morning. She was well
prepared for the questions that were asked of her. Not too bad for a junior senator in her first term. I guess you had to have followed
her husbands term to catch the
lies. Well, maybe she is being groomed for v.p.

This is very funny carping at Hilary for not having solutions. If you hadn't noticed, Bill Clinton (in between sleazy blow jobs) ran an incredible economy, brought the budget into surplus and raised American prestige around the world. Honestly, policy wise - that administration walked the walk. I've got lots of things to criticize Clinton about - but he not only had solutions, he implimented them.

To say Hilary or others involved in the Clinton administration only offer criticism and not solutions is empty rhetoric.

sheeeeeit. Clinton's reign coincided with the Internet boom in the 90's. It was unfortunately a false prosperity, which was starting to correct at the end of his presidency.

And Clinton did NOT help America's image overseas where it counted. He was a craven appeaser and did more than any other past president in encouraging terrorists to strike. And his policy on China was reprehensible. He's to a large extent responsible for China's continuing ascendency to superpower status. He also ignored oil resources in Africa, which allowed China to get a substantial lead in the region. (of course, I can fault Bush for not taking more interest as well).

Clinton did some things right - but not the issues you bring up.

As always, Mutt nailed it. I have also heard that it was a big "afront" to some of the Muslum nations to send Albright as our Rep. (granted, what else would she do.......). Clinton's hands are real dirty in some areas and non exsistant in others.

The arguement that the left doesn't have a position because they cannot offer solutions, is weak at best. We here on TT are a microcosum of America and that is reflected. It is not up to us to solve the problems, we are not in office. It is up to the people who were elected to take care of biz. When they do not, they must be removed. That being said, to stablize my position in there eyes and make it more legit, I offer this few suggestions:

Balance the d@mn budget

Encourage American business (not the small guys, the big ones) to hire Americans, build for Americans and give our money to Americans. Make it difficult to take jobs over seas.

Roll back NAFTA

Enforce the Immagration Laws on the books and do somthing about Illegals

Inspire our youth (through programs or otherwise) to get out there and get some jobs that the illegals are taking!

Step in and take control of the insurance companies, drug companies, oil companies, airline companies, or at the every least, knock'em around a little to enforce the fact that they should not be rapping the good 'ole U S of A.

Simplify the laws into more of a legal-ease language so the common folk can understand what's going on.

Eliminate pork barrel!

Make healthcare affordable NOW, for our seniors, not 2 years from now. Some will not see the help they need.

Quit pissing on the World! We need to be a leader! We look like #&%!$s right now and will not get the help we need, if we need it (like now?)

.....I'm sure that with a couple of seconds, we could all (Dems and Repubs) could come up with something to change. Is what I'm talking about socialist? Maybe to a point, however, this country is in real long term trouble and we need to take action. It rests with us, people, let's not forget that. We are the ones at fault for what's happening. Our lack of voting in this country is down right wrong! The minority calls the shots for us. How come we don't have at least 50% turn out for Elections? People are parishing around the world to gain what we abuse. Step up!

Mutt: Every time the economy works well, people can claim that it was just luck. The oil price collapse, etc... but the fact is that Clinton did hold a line on spending. The number of people employed in the federal government shrank - and the budget got balanced. As for the correction - yes there was an internet bubble that burst - but that wasn't the whole source of economic growth in the country and the correction has lasted suprisingly long - especially in the face of monstrous deficit spending that is normally a powerful economic stimulant.

Good Post Laqtis but what you are advocating is not socialism, but socialism for Americans only or
National Socialism.

This is not a government model that would make many people comfortable. National Socialism as a form of government has also been tried before.

I really don't think rolling back NAFTA is supported by any data, laqtis. For the most part, it's been working better than expected. The giant sucking sound has been coming from China.

The Rubin management team crafted policies that worked to fend off some serious challenges to the economy, mutt. Sure the maturation of IT helped but we could have easily been derailed by several of the crises that occurred on Clinton’s watch.

The Bush team came in with an ideologically driven, one-size fits all policy of tax cuts which they pursued regardless of what was happening in the economy. Tax cuts to reduce the deficit, tax cuts to stimulate jobs, and tax cuts no matter what. The result has been an anemic jobless recovery and a huge deficit with serious long-term ramifications.

Alternatives proposed by many on the left included extending unemployment benefits, providing aid to the states and a temporary rebate of payroll taxes and/or an expansion of the earned income tax credit, all paid for by repealing future tax cuts. In short: text book solutions to real world problems executed with adult-level fiscal responsibility.

Nigal
Just because this particular article didn't offer any solutions to the problem doesn't necessarily reflect her in that light. Let's take Social Security, being that the article mentioned it. She is opposed to the Bush plan of privatizing SS. Her plan is for it to remain under federal control, with reforms as to how the trust fund is handled. This could be done by investing in Treasury bills, implying reforms that would put this fund in a 'lockbox.' The lockbox is a good first step in reform as it keeps the system secure and avoids privatization. She opposes privatizing on the basis of the 'risk factor.' Under the lockbox plan, control is removed from federal budget makers and money cannot be borrowed from it without an overwhelming vote of congress. There's more to it, but I was just trying to point out a few factors to show that she's not just in office with no purpose but to knock Bush.

Frankly, as a resident from the state she represents, I agree with a lot of the her stands on important issues. People knock her a lot, but I don't see where she is doing a horrendous job, as some folks seem to imply...

NAFTA needs to go. If you lived where I do, you'd see that. This state has been loosing Manufacturing jobs up the wazoo since it was passed. There all going to Mexico, that's a fact.

The other fact of this area is that we are loosing our computer jobs to India. Cheaper labor, as skilled workers. China is now a hot bed for the Big Three. There's a big effort to invest there for them. The "big huge sucking sound" is coming from everywhere, fellas. NAFTA opened the flood gates. Let me ask.....what did we get outta that deal? Unemployment and more growth in the serivce sector.....

I'm not in favor of NAFTA - at least without some modifications about labor practices, health and sanitation, and environmental practices. Nonetheless, some of my anti-NAFTA fervor was dampened when I learned that everyone (even China!) is losing manufacturing jobs due to increased productivity. So, a lot of that suction ain't coming from other countries.

It's not a matter of me loving Dubya, Bush YES, Dubya, not always. I have even voiced critizism of him myself. Your head must have been buried up Violin's a$$ that day and didn't catch it. The whole issue, that you and Violin have so slyly drawn attention away from, is the lack of explanations on some liber's part to offer solutions along with their critism.
