the new Black Diamond tents are up on their website. They are lighter versions of the Bibler tents using epic and silnylon.

Pretty cool looking and really light.

The Light Sabre is BD's version of the Tripod Bivy and it is under 2lbs.

Might have to get this one! It is also under $200

Another one who talks to themselves...don't you hate that when you start a good thread and everyone else is talking drugs, sex and rock and roll? (feeling sickly thread, crazy men, and what music are you tt'ing with threads)

The tent looks good, I see they also have crampons. If North Cove has them in stock I'll try and get up there and take a look.

I can't justify a new tent...or can I?

I was thinking about getting a three-man, just in case three members of my family want to go into the backcountry (Yeah right...talk about rationalizing). I don't think a silnylon tent would be the right choice for me though, not with kids.

Not too expensive if you compare it to the Bibler tents.

Yes Gemini it has a floor. And real doors and windows with screens.

how durable is epic fabric?

It s pretty lightweight but they make jackets out of it. I would think a jacket would have more abrasion than a tent. The floors are silnylon so you would probably need a ground cloth.

Hell! The tripod is down $130 from last years price, and half the weight to boot! Pennsy is going to be pissed! He just bought the ID bivy that closely resembles the tripod, paid double for it.

All I know is that Bibler & Black Diamond make some very hard core stuff that is a must for backpackers.

Yea, (drooling)
and that Lighthouse is free standing too! I hope I get some cash for Christmas.
I was looking at the Henry Shires stuff, but I may have to have the Lighthouse. I always liked the Bibler - Ahwahnee (the lighthouse is a lightweight duplicate of the Ahwahnee), but I couldn't spend $650 on a tent. And it weighs over five pounds.

I've been ignoring this thread because I didn't want to know how much lighter / inexpensive everything was AFTER I'VE ALREADY SPENT MY $$!!

Having now whined & b!tched, I will unabashedly recommend this stuff. I've put my Bibler I tent through a lot, it's one of my most reliable, dependable, trustworthy pieces of gear. It's withstood everything from sleet, 5 ft. snowfalls in one nite, 60+ MPH winds off the ocean, and I still can't find anything wrong with it.

Good gear, this.

Buddha Bear

Arrrrggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!
Tell me about it brother Buddha!
Actually, I was eyeing up the Bipod, not the Tripod. I really don't want a bivy that has more poles than my tent.
My ID should be here in a few days. It's 1lb 14oz, 10 ounces heavier than that new Lightsabre and a bit cheaper, but it's simpler (simple is my middle name ya know) than the 2 pole Lightsabre. It still looks pretty sweet though.

Hey Wanderer - our I Tents still kick major A$$ and I'm sure more durable than these new versions, but less than 3lbs? Damn!

Zac - NO NO NO... I am not buying 2 bivies. You think I'm a gear junkie or something?

There's some pretty good comments on BD tents and about Epic fabric over at backpacking.net in the lighweight gear section. Apparently Black Diamond will be updating their website to explain what Epic is a little better. According to one 4 year user dirt can act as a conduit for leakage. I never saw or used the fabric so I can't comment on it.

I've paid too much for a lot of gear, but gotta say that I think my I tent is worth every $.01 I paid for it. When it's winter in the Sierra & I'm at 9,000 ft. or whatever, and could get buried for days, I really like having a dependable shelter. I trust my Bibler, and that all by itself is worth a lot to me. I'll save money on many other items, not on my winter shelter!

Info about Epic Fabric
EPIC by Nextec fabrics is marketed as being highly water resistant. This means EPIC resists penetration by water under all but the most extreme conditions.  However, we have done thorough research in-house on EPIC, and have found that the material itself is indeed waterproof (determined using a Suter Test to be safe under 1lb of hydrostatic pressure). Since EPIC is utilized mostly in the apparel marketplace, there is hesitation to market the material as being "waterproof" because there is the perception in the general public that "waterproof means not breathable". Therefore, Nextec continues to market the material as being 'highly water resistant'.

We will be updating our site soon, stating that EPIC is highly water resistant, along with testing info and FAQ's in regards to EPIC, and the SuperLight line of tents offered by Black Diamond.  Below I've put a couple faq's ..

Epic by Nextec/Superlight Tent facts:
1. The Epic-treated 30d polyester fabric we are using in the Superlight Tent series has been proven by internal BD lab testing to be waterproof (safe under 1lb of hydrostatic pressure).

2. The siliconcoated 30d double-ripstop nylon floor fabric we are using in the Superlight Tent series has also been proven by internal BD lab testing to be waterproof (safe under 1lb of hydrostatic pressure).

3. Because we don't factory seam seal the Superlight Tent seams, we recommend using the tube of SilNet/applicator that we include in the 'goody' bags in each Superlight Tent. This will further enhance the water-resistant capabilities of the Superlight Tent.

If it doesn't fit, I cannot use it!!
I don't want to get too personal, but how tall and/or burly are you guys??? Do these tents fit -ahem- bigger people? (Can you really sit up in the tent??Manufacturers' dimensions can be misleading.)
