Hobbs Cabin Overnighter

I did this hike last year with Katibug, we had a great trip. The miles do get long! If the cabin isn't available the campsite is a good one. Have fun. Might have to made this one!”

“No thanks necesarry (said while taking a bow)...I just havent had a saturday off in awhile, and havent been in the woods with anyone other than myself in even longer.”

“Cool, fonsie, if you want to be point you can try and get us the spaces at the cabin. Looks like 5 definites and 2 maybes at this point.”

“works for me. Assuming we get there early enough and there do end up being 7 of us, are we going to draw straws or something to see who the odd man/woman out is?”

“I think there's 6 bunks plus floor space. We can draw straws for who gets the bunks, but there should be space for everyone in the cabin, unless a lot more show up.”

“I think I'll be hangin' in the trees...y'all can have the cabin.”

“You get any underpinning for that hammock yet?”

“Yup.”

“This oughta be interesting...can't wait to see your new setup.”

“It's pretty simple, really. I use an MPI Outdoor all-weather blanket (11 0z.) clipped to the underside of the hammock. It has a layer of aluminum laminated to 3 layers of plastic for durability and, in theory at least, will reflect 90% of your body heat back atcha. If it gets windy, I'll hang my siltarp on the windward side. I used this setup on our last AT outing with the stomper of stoves (minus the siltarp). If you recall, we had a big blow with driving rain that Saturday night. The temp dropped to 39 degrees and I was warm as toast with no more than a poncho liner over me. I figure with fleece and my -5 degree Backside bag, I'll be just fine at Savage Gulf. It won't be any colder than last January and I will not repeat the mistakes I made then.”

“Sounds like a good set up. I am going to have to try it with my hammock. Where did you get the outdoor blanket?”

“I am a maybe on this trip.....will see if co worker will trade with me......should be great with no ticks!!!”

“Well if divinity is going, then I am too! Really I would love to, don't know my schedule yet, may have to work. Is there a fireplace in the cabin? I would like to see your hammock setup FG. I am totally sold on the hammock camping. Since there are no big hills on this trip maybe I can make it. My breathing is lots better, good drugs!”

“I believe that yes, there is a fireplace in Hobbs Cabin. What there is not, is any guarantee that we will be able to use it. So if you're planning on this hike, plan for the worst and bring a shelter.

Even outside, a Father Goose campfire will keep you plenty warm, lol...”

“I slept in my hammock last night. The temp was about 29 degrees with no wind. Just used the space blanket under the hammock, slept on my ThermARest Ultralite pad, wore thermal underwear and Polartec socks and draped my sleeping bag over myself like a quilt. Warm and snug as the proverbial bug.

There is indeed a fireplace at Hobbs. With the recent rain, there should be no fire restrictions.”

“Just seemed like the thing to do after an evening at the VFW?”

“Never made it to the Vee. Mother G evidently broke a nail trying to get me upstairs, LOL. She's at the body shop now, getting it fixed. We're having dinner at the Moose tonight. God help me...”

“Looks like I might have to work that Saturday. I will not know for sure until Wednesday, but hope that all of you have a good time. “If I can't go this time, I still have the 24th through 5th off of work, so will probably end up doing some hiking during that time, if any of you guys want to come along. I haven't really planned any destinations yet, but either around Middle TN here or Smokies/Pisgah something.”

“The weather situation is looking up for next weekend. Lows in the low 30s and no rain/snow.”

“Keep us informed, dk if I will make it either this weekend but would like to plan something in that area you mentioned. I am also off work that week and a half.”

I have been absent for quite a while. Maybe you could catch me up on all the changes that have occured since my last group outing with you guys on rainy night last April. Bits and pieces of info make it sound like a real soap opera.

Wish I could join you guys next weekend. That is my FAVORITE hike. I would like to get your hammock modification details. In fact, come to think of it, Hobbs Cabin was the trip where everyone (yourself included) made fun of my Hennessy. My how times have changed.

No, no, searcher me lad. The way I recall it, we made fun of you for freezing your ASS OFF in your hammock. It did make me reluctant to get one for a while, though.”
