just hold your lighter to the bottom of the svea for about 10 seconds. it'll build enough pressure to push fuel out into the primer cup.

I'm getting a guy at work into "real" hiking..he said he had a stove he wanted to show me. It was an Optimus Hiker...i had always wanted one of these when i was in scouts. He brought his in..it's a 111...it's the size of a six pack of beer, it's FEAKING HUGE, i've never seen one this size!!!!

I love my esbit, but i'm looking for an esbit wing (lighter, smaller)

I have two of the "wing" stoves and they are light, but can bend easily. Well, at least mine seems to get bent easily. Anyway, I'll be using one for a week here soon...

Whoever buys a titanium esbit stove and titanium windscreen, better not be bi$ching about the cost of esbit tabs !! haha!

I use an esbit stove similar to the one above and it's only a few ounces. Although, I admit it can be easy to bend if you're not careful. I'm hoping the titanium stove is a little stiffer than the one I have.

Esbit 12 pack for $4.95 (see link below). Shipping is "ok" but not great. 5 packs of 12 comes to $33 bucks or $6.60 per pack wich is not that great.

Anyone know of a better deal? I need a resupply.

No, birch, I don't need a sack of toy-esbit tabs... ;)

I found a better deal. REI sells the things for $5.95 for 12 and with delivery to my nearest store the cost stays low. I still have to pay sales tax.

Yeah, they are pricey but I still like using them for long distance hikes where my pack weight is a concern. I have a tiny 2oz wing stove that I use with the tablets. I can get the wing stove, wind screen, lighter, small sponge, and about ten tablets inside my pot. That works for me. I carry a small piece of sponge to scrub the spooge off the bottom of the pot. I'm preparing for an 8 day hike and I'll definitely be using the esbit tablets. I usually take along a cannister stove for shorter/social trips.

I have used alcohol and pepsi can stoves in the past, but to me it's all about personal preference.

The gunk is the only bad thing about Esbit tabs.
I use them sometimes.

The key to using esbits is a good windscreen so most all the heat goes into the pot.

i use that beer can pot setup thingy. i don't deal with the scunge since I close the bottom of the stove and it is sealed under the cook stand. hard to describe.

that beer can setup works really well with an alcohol stove, btw.

$30 for 12 boxes from MPI directly. You have to pre-pay and pay for shipping. Not a bad deal eh?

I know where I'll be restocking from now on.

BTW, MPI now manufactures their own version of esbit, and no longer sells esbit brand. It's the exact same product according to Heather @ MPI.

MPI is the company that distributes Esbit in the USA, and manufactures it in Germany. Now they manufacture something the same as esbit but not called esbit, for sale in the USA, apparently.

There is no link. You have to call the company.

We got a case a few years back and we're just now finishing it up. We don't get out as often as you Kimmysan, but we only use the esbit (unless it's winter or a paddling trip).

I get a chance to buy a case for 1/2 off every second year through a Seirra Club trip leader I know.

Yeah I know but you never offer your friends one anymore. ;)

I think I'll end up paying just a touch more for a case from the manufacturer, due to shipping. But just about the same price.
Hey, I'm going to drop you an email here in a second.

Want some of mine?

Anyone have any experience with the Boy Scout Esbit stove, or the Ti Esbit stove from backpackinglight.com, or any stove lighter than the steel one? I'm going to get a chance to burn up a box or two next month.

Isn't the Boy Scout version aluminum?
That would be much lighter.

Here's the very first aluminum flashing windscreen/potstand I made for using Esbit tabs years ago. I still use it when I take Esbits.

I think it's still steel, just smaller

Ti stove = 13g
Folding Wing Stove (boyscout) = 1.3 oz.
Esbit folding pocket stove = 3.25 oz.

SS - I made a stove/windscreen very much like that, using your page as a starting point.

I just placed my order with MPI. It ended up costing $38.20 for a case (12 boxes) of esbit. Not too bad.

The number is 1-800-343-5827. Item # 7013. It's $30 per case w/ a 10% surcharge if your order is less than $350.00. Shipping was $5. They won't send the stuff until they get a check but that's okay w/ me.

lol, I'm not sure I'd admit I couldn't operate an esbit stove. ;)

I don't use much else. It not only boils water but it will even get up to a rolling boil. A windscreen is pretty much essential.
