MBE - Member of the British Empire (I think)
CBE - Commander of the

You basically get to put the initials after you name, and if you're knighted you get to be called Sir.
The awards are basically decided by the government and while they were given to people like Churchill, they have now been broadened to account for achievements in any area, be that arts, sport, entertainment or public service.
There are higher awards like the order of the garter which some people, like Churchill, also recieved.”
