Hey StormBringer, how far is the REI in fairfax from the trailhead? I think I might have to make a side trip there Sunday to look around.

Time on the D.C. Beltway is relative to the time of day.

Distance from South Mountain to Fairfax probably 60-70 miles.

Anyone know where we're staying Saturday night? Is there a shelter we're hiking to or are we just gonna set up camp wherever we find a good spot?
Dub

I think calm said in a shelter near the AT.

that would be cool. shelters are more fun. we can make a fire Sat and drink and howl at the almost new moon.

Wait just a cotton pickin' second here...there are TWO cities named Boonsboro in MD. Boonsboro Washington, MD and Boonsboro Carolina, MD....I'm assuming it's the Carolina one as it's closer to Harpers Ferry and the AT?
Dub

"Ok guys how does this sound............We can meet at 8AM at The Old South Mountain Inn, its right down the road from where the AT crosses Alternate Route 40, In Boonsboro. be careful not to confuse Alternate Route 40 and Route 40. We will park half the cars ( I was told theres a gravel lot thats ok to use in that area), take the other half up to SR77 (Foxville Road) and start hiking north to south. Total distance is about 13 miles. Theres no really big climbs but alot of little ups and downs. Total elevation gain of about 2200 ft. Total descending elevation is about 2700ft. I kept the distance low so we could take our time and because it gets dark so early. I've never hiked here, just going by what info I could find, So if anyone has any input let me know."

Dub, Boonsboro is west of the AT and Burkittsville is to the east.
Is your e-mail OK?
That is Boosboro, Maryland, yeah?

The AT in Maryland is not very strenuous. The grades are not that steep, except the one coming north from Harpers Ferry.

Check out this Mapquest search. When I did a driving directions from Columbus to Boonsboro MD it said it was 8 hours and near the coast. When I searched for just Boonsboro it showed that there are TWO cities in Boonsboro.

I just did a Mapquest to the INN we are supposed to meet at, 6 hours from me. I guess I'll meet Scorch, Calmwater, and Stormbringer there on Friday and then we'll all find a place to camp nearby. Then we are hiking 13 miles Southbound on the AT per the post above.

Whew...why can't this information be centralized on the Trip page?
Dub
