Maryland Trip (12/20-21)

“Geo, I'm assuming you've hiked the Maryland section of the AT from your post above...are there any photo worthy parts that deserve an SLR or will a point and shoot camera be fine? If there's something outstanding I usually take my SLR, if not I save 2lbs and take the point and shoot. Thanks.”

“I posted the trip over on the other site and one more person wants to join us on Saturday for dayhiking...so that puts us up to 3 dayhikers and 6 overnighters...this is getting to be a big trip! Can't wait to see you guys there...I'm packing today!

BTW, Squilax of the other site told me there is an AT shelter 300 yards south of the Inn that we can camp at on Friday. He also said you had to ask permission from the Inn to use the gravel lot.”

“??? I dunno...probably 5 miles or so. I'm sure there will be signs posted right at the beginning of the trail. You have a mileage limit you wanna stay under or something?”

I believe that Washington Monument State Park is at the south end.
There is "a" Washington Monument there, one of the first built.
It is a round stone tower with a stairway to a deck on top.
The thing is only about forty feet tall and cylindrical in shape.

The plan to spent Friday night at the shelter just south of WMSP sounds good.”

“I walked with the gang for a few miles and then doubled back about 3:15.
I got back to my car at about 4:45.

The temperature was about 25 and pretty windy especially on the ridgetop.

There is a couple inches of snow....yada, yada....I hope they make it back alive.”

“Where did you hike with them TT? I had all these neat plans on sneaking up on them and scaring them Blair Witch style. I never saw them though.

I parked at Crampton Gap in Gathland SP on Gapland Rd, and hiked north. It was about 7 miles to the South Mt Inn where they planned to leave a car. I contimued north 6 miles to the Knob Hill lean-to where they planned to camp Sat night.

I gathered a bunch of firewood, cleaned the snow off the picnic table, and prepared for visitors. They never arrived so I had all the goodies I packed to myself.

A weird thing happened on the hike back today. About 3 miles from my car, I saw a big pool of blood right on the middle of the trail. For the next few hundred yards, there were lots of blood splattering on the trail, ranging from just a few drops to big blotches. Then there were sled tracks that went on for 1/4 of a mile with occastional blood splatterings. I was thinking it was a deer kill and they were draggin it out on a sled. But for 3 miles? All of a sudden, the sled and blood tracks stopped dead. Just vanished with no further signs of the sled tracks. The trail was fairly in the open at that point and the one scenario I come up with is a helicopter air rescue? I did see a hunter in that area yesterday, I did hear gunshots and I did hear a chopper in the afternoon. Hear anything about this TT? Or perhaps it was a Blair Witch thing?

In any case, I hope the gang is all ok and I'm sorry I missed them.”

“Sometimes you can find out about these things by checking out online newspapers from the nearest town. If someone was hurt and rescued on a sled, it's bound to be in some newspaper down there.”

I'm glad you missed them !! You might have scared the #&%!$ out of Scorchie and she'd never hike with us again !! Actually, it would've been pretty neat. That blood trail is freaky.

“Blood in the snow is pretty common right after or during deer hunting season. It's really strange that the tracks just ended though.”

“Pennsy, we did park at Sout Mt. Inn on Friday night and then shuttled the cars: half to the trail head and half at the ending point.

Sucks that we missed you!!! Shoulda called! You missed a VERYYYYYYYYYY drunk Scorchy on Saturday night.

We had a blast, it was a great hike. VERY cold: got into the teens on Saturday night.

That's some weird #&%!$ about blood,.. didn't see it though. The only strange thing was that towards the Pogo campsite, I heard what sounded like children laughing. It was just starting to get dark at that time. John didn't hear it and the rest of the crew was some ways behind us. Got to camp and later was talking with 2poops and he heard it as well, but no one else did. Kinda freaky.”

There was already snow on the ground and because of the elevation, there was more snow for the hike than on the streets.”

“I heard some kids laughing after I went to bed when you and John were taking a night hike...I thought it was a dog/coyote at first, then I heard it again and it sounded like someone laughing. That's why when you guys came back to the camp site and were being sneaky I was about to bust outta the tent and whoop some ass...thought someone was messing around.”
