When they heard I was a newly converted libel, they descended upon me like Ruch Limbaugh on an oxycontin shipment form S. America.

After 3 hours of big words like "secular", and "theology" being rammed down my throat by folks who never "test drove" the goods. I finally relented to posting on TT. Now I must get to bed, for if I miss church tomorrow, I was told I'm going to hell.

I wasn't bashing them, I found the preaching amusing. I have no problem with Christians, I just don't like the conversion attempts at holiday parties.

Interesting rosey, I allways thought the Incas were brought down by a handfull of Spanish and the diseases they brought, along with all the local Inca slaves that joined with the Spanish.

Yep, this is just another 'Bash Christians' thread.
Boring.....

It's a "bash evangelists" thread, thank you.

The SApanish were sent to the Incan empire in a gold grab for the Queen of Spain. Along with the conquistadors, the Spanish sent christian missionaries. After the conquistadors decimated the empire (the Incas thought they were gods due to mythological beliefs) through warfare and the intentional spread of disease, they scooped up the gold, and left the remaining natives to the mercy of the missionaries. The missionaries forcefully converted many of the Incas, and, in the process, destryed much of thier culture in doing so. The missionaries burned books, destroyed statues and ancient texts. They successfully wiped out the majority of Incan culture, in the name of God.

If that isn't evil, I don't know what is. One of the points I made to the evangelists last night was this: They lauded Bush, and his efforts to fight al-queda, and those responsible to The World Trade Center Tragedy, yet failed to associate that act with the Crusades or the decimation of the Incan empire. I also asked them why is was OK to kill those folks in the name of God, yet abortion was so evil. AFter some detailed response about the twisted, intreperated spin of the bible and christian doctrine, I felt like I was in court.

After a long night of discussions, my final satement to those folks was this: Although I respect your commitment to your faith, please respect the beliefs and rights of others. Don't force your opinion down my throat, and don't try to influence the freedoms that we have in this country. My thoughts on faith may be wrong, and I don't plan on discussing them with people unless they ask me, I expect the same from you. And, if you try to force your values upon me, I'll fight you tooth and nail, and I'll win.

Now where is all the oxycontin you people are hiding!

Mostly true Buddha, though I am of the impression that the Incas didn't have any written word. Everything that is known about them is the result of memoirs from the Spanish or someone of Incan descent finally writing down some of the oral tradition.

But your point still stands. Seems like the Christian church often likes to dictate how it should be. From the Moors, to the Incas, to abortion clinic bombings, Christians have resorted to violence in an attempt to prove how right they are.

How wrong.

Where I lived overseas, the Missionary's handed out T-shirts to all the women because they went around bare breasted...The next day, down by the river where the women washed their clothes the Missionary discovered that they had cut holes in their T-shirts for their breasts. She had a fit, called them sinners and said they would burn in Hell for it.

I still remember the look in those poor womens eyes, they couldn't understand what they had done wrong.

Most of the Missionary's were wonderful, kind and caring people, but like so many things, it only takes one......

Buddha Bear,

You endured three hours of evangelistic efforts without asking them to back off? But if in fact you did request to be spared of their continuous barrage, and if in fact they did not relent, then you're certainly justified in pummeling them back in this forum ...though I expect they reap no benefit from the ridicule offered here because they do not visit this message board (?). On the other hand, since you engage or endure evangelism for amusement purposes, I can appreciate your perspective, because I used to enjoy the same at one time myself ...thought it was "fun" for example, to make my sister cry with my intellectual arguments against her silly faith.

Thanks for clarifying.

Respect and tolerance to all.

Peace.

Just to play the Evangel's advocate: I think I read somewhere that Christianity had some connection to this holiday - that Jesus wasn't 100% irrelevant?

I suppose its not a big deal, after all it ain't like he was the guy who put the "Christ" in "Christmas?

Christmas is just the hijacked Teutonic "pagan" Yule observation of the Winter Solstice. You can't go around stealing someone else's holiday and then getting pissy about someone not getting with your program.

Yes - when they put the Christ in Christmas, they took the shine off a fine Roman holiday. Although lacking the splendor of the Roman holiday, the barbarian festivities of the yuletide were a grand delight as well.

"It's instructive how just one season away from lusting after
material things can break the habit. It's something like
liberation from an addiction or lifestyle choice. Being away
from it can cause one to realize the behavior is neither missed
nor needed for fulfillment and enjoyment. Absenting oneself from
this faux Christmas might bring a conversion to its real meaning
and free a family from its dependency on material things.... I love
the original Christmas. I have come to detest the masquerade that
does not even pretend to be what it was when I was growing up.
That other Christmas I intend to keep. This monstrosity I will
try with increasing difficulty to ignore." --Cal Thomas

what i find interesting is how ya'll anti-Christians always mention abortion clinics as an example of how screwed up Christians are. look, i'm no zealot, i rarely even attend(at the behest of the great buffalobabe who aften takes the boys without me) but if you really think Christians think that way, no wonder you despise them so much. anyone who kills is a murderer, IMO. the unibomber was a liberal, so does that make all liberals murderers? i can relate to the original post, but it's amazing how many people in here really despise Christians. and it's mostly the liberals who do so. i think the mindset is that they don't wanna be acountable to anyone(even God). maybe they think they are too smart to believe in God, i dunno. i don't really care what anybody believes. i mean, why should i? you're the one going to hell....HAHHAHAHA! anyways, lots of people you know believe in Jesus and are afraid to say so outloud because they will be ostrasized by intolerant people like you. i don't ever talk about religion to people unless someone asks me. i jsut don't get it but i guess it's just not hip to believe in God. i never killed any incas or abortion doctors. i never preached salvation to anyone in my whole life. but i am not ashamed for believing that something other than dumb luck created all the beautiful things on this earth. something bigger than us. something we can't even phathom the greatness of. jsut my 2 cents...

THAT's interesting.

Bhuda Bear's story reminds of a Christmas party I went to a few years ago. I was out on the porch with two of the other Significant Others. They might've been Christian, I don't know -- they didn't try to convert me.

But when they learned I wasn't a Conservative Republican Like Everybody Else, they just stood there and sputtered. It was hilarious.

They reacted as if I had told them I was from Pluto, LOLOL

JO - I was invited to the party by the host, who is my sister-in-laws good friend. My sis-in-law was supposed to be there, but is preggers, and didn't feel well. When I went to the party, I didn't think I was going to be pointed out as "this is the guy that used to be republican, but is now a democrat". Once that statement was made, I became the attraction at the zoo, and everybody wanted to know why. They didn't like what I told them, so I guess I get the Christian basher label now. I don't get it. I didn't even attempt to burn any bibles, William Bennet books or Jim and Tammy Faye videos. Sheeesh!
