LOL... hmmm....chemical heaters, bag of sausage and cheese stuffed down my shirt to keep it from freezing. Sometimes put my camelbak in there too.” 1:33:21 PM 12/15/03 “hmmm sausage and cheese down your shirt..... well I guess that wouldn't be too bad.” 1:36:08 PM 12/15/03 “Wet Boot Dryer - Boil water & put it your Nalgene Bottle. Place bottle in boot. Boil more water and pour into your MSR Dromadery (sp) container. Drape over the front of your boot. This should unfreeze the boot and get the moisture out in 15-30 minutes.” 1:36:30 PM 12/15/03 “come on now..I would to hear that too... snow? what's snow? I have never heard this word before... Boy, I wish it would snow here more often.” 1:37:17 PM 12/15/03 “Might be fun to reach in for a snack with twiggy. ;) Dang! That doesn't feel like cheese! ;)” 1:38:40 PM 12/15/03 “hmmm sausage and cheese down your shirt..... well I guess that wouldn't be too bad." LtHiker 01:36:08 PM 12/15/0 or that would explain a lot. layers. just make sure you dont melt your bottle because you left it near the fire for to long..boot warmers in your boots at night. feels very comfy in the chilly morning,” 1:39:39 PM 12/15/03 “Hike naked!” 1:42:57 PM 12/15/03 “I hear ya Gemini - keep seeing the weather report for more northerly places. I need to move, again.” 1:44:51 PM 12/15/03 “Fleece pants for a top layer, down booties and a balaclave to keep the neck and cheeks from turning pink.” 1:45:35 PM 12/15/03 “that ain't how it works SS, LOL... frozen lunch is not good and in between shirt layers is easiest.” 1:47:10 PM 12/15/03 “* layering everything (incl hats and gloves) * Putting some electrolyte drink mix in the water bottle to lower the freezing point. * Steal Twiggy's booze when you get a chance. * High fat snacks (not just sausage and cheese, nuts - esp macadamias). * Can take frozen foods (but watch water weight). * Don't ferget gaiters. * Dry backups for everything that touches your skin (including glove liners). * If you aren't staying in a cabin that can be heated, travel with someone who you enjoy holding on to.” 1:49:55 PM 12/15/03 “travel with someone who you enjoy holding on to." pedxing 01:49:55 PM Dibs on twigeater! ;)” 1:58:22 PM 12/15/03 “dang, I guess I am ready then. Well, besides my sleeping bag, that needs some work. Roam around, we need to take a trip up north :)” 2:00:03 PM 12/15/03 “SS, your message wasn't there before. Now mine looks dumb... :(” 2:02:46 PM 12/15/03 This is good! 2:03:06 PM 12/15/03 “next time I go three hour touring, I am securing the booze first, LOL...and anyone who leaves their booze in the car gets voted off the island! LOL SS, ped's suggestion was "if you aren't statying in a cabin that's heated" - and ours are. :)” 2:05:12 PM 12/15/03 “Gem - You wanted 'Dibs on twigeater'? Can't have her, she's mine, all mine! ;)” 2:07:34 PM 12/15/03 “Hey twiggy, I read that cabin we are staying in has bunks and one double bed. Do we get the bed?” 2:11:35 PM 12/15/03 “nope, that's reserved for the honeymooners. :) you get the couch.” 2:12:59 PM 12/15/03 “Just be glad it ain't the bunny pot you're sleeping, SS...lol...” 2:14:26 PM 12/15/03 “rats, foiled again!” 2:15:30 PM 12/15/03 “LOL @ bit...” 2:15:55 PM 12/15/03 “okay...this is a winter gear thread. Attention please!! ;) what makes winter backpacking more fun?? Snow shoes... if you ever get to use them.” 2:21:47 PM 12/15/03 “I'd love to go somewhere that I had to use snowshoes! Of course I'd have to buy some first... curious... is there any kind of "learning curve" or do you just strap them on and start walking. Like, I know with x-country skis, you need a little practice.” 3:21:05 PM 12/15/03 “hey stove, I got twiggy first and she knows what I am talking about ;)” 3:37:52 PM 12/15/03 “Roam Around, I hope you are not asking me???? I have no clue. Did not have a change to use them yet. I heard it's not that big of a deal, or at least not a very large learning curve...but then...I really don't know... so attention snow shoers...IS THERE A BIG LEARNING CURVE??” 3:57:07 PM 12/15/03 “BTW Skeetah Bait and i are the honeymooners!!! Just hope we can make it.....” 4:00:42 PM 12/15/03 “I was asking anybody that might be able to answer. Not this winter, but next I'm going to make a pointed effort to go somewhere a little more extreme.” 4:01:10 PM 12/15/03 “Ah sheyat Gemini. Lets just get us a pair and start driving north till we hit snow at least three feet deep and try em out.” 4:03:53 PM 12/15/03 “ha, ya know what? I was planning on doing that after christmas. :) Not kidding.... Heeheehee, I already have snow shoes. So now you know...I am desperate to find some snow.” 4:17:38 PM 12/15/03 “There is snow in my backyard!” 6:38:47 PM 12/15/03 “buddha, give me a couple of hours...I'll be right over...” 6:43:30 PM 12/15/03 “buddha, give me a couple of hours...I'll be right over...” 6:43:30 PM 12/15/03 “damn, shaking while I hit the submit button...see what ya do to me...” 6:43:56 PM 12/15/03 “There is back in my snow yard!” 6:45:09 PM 12/15/03 “Its the thought of snow. HAHAHAHA” 6:45:48 PM 12/15/03 “yeah...got to drive me nuts... hahahaaaa” 6:46:36 PM 12/15/03 “Damn! I thought it was the thought of me!” 6:47:42 PM 12/15/03 “Prolly can't do anything in Jan, I'm trying my best to get in on the Savage Gulf trip. Maybe in Feb I can pull off a long weekend somewhere cold and white.” 6:50:02 PM 12/15/03 “Winter nights are long so consider bringing a book or something to keep amused. If you're hiking with others you can sit outside around a fire, but if the weather is bad sometimes you can't and then the night's really long.” 6:55:14 PM 12/15/03 “ATTENTION GEMINI: THERE IS NO LEARNING CURVE FOR SNOWSHOEING. Just strap em on and walk. It's that easy. The learning curve is practicing getting them off and on with gloves on. Lt - 1 thing that makes winter packing fun for me is getting warm at camp and STAYING warm. If you can't stay warm in camp, then it's a long long night in the tent. I solo'd this past weekend and made the most of it. I got a nice fire going, put down some tyvek, my sleeping pad, got my camp chair out, and slid halfway into my sleeping bag. A nice hot meal, some good merlot, and a good book made this a very pleasant evening.” 7:12:40 PM 12/15/03 “THANKS PENNSY!!!! I THOUGHT SO!!!” 7:14:04 PM 12/15/03 “Sounds pretty good, Pennsy. Did you worry about the sparks burning holes in the sleeping bag?” 7:17:52 PM 12/15/03 “Stop yelling at me.” 7:18:20 PM 12/15/03 “No Lyndy cuz I wasn't that close to the fire, and it was far from one of those special Jerbear bonfires.” 7:20:08 PM 12/15/03 “Speaking of which, where is Jerbear? Is he still on our little planet?” 7:21:46 PM 12/15/03 “You're too good Bruce Almighty!, always on topic. haha! :)” 7:22:03 PM 12/15/03 “WHAT??? YOU YELLED AT ME FIRST!!!!! AND I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG!!” 7:22:56 PM 12/15/03 “Hey Twigster! How is the snow treating you? We've been having plenty of white stuff here.” 7:24:58 PM 12/15/03
