Winter backpacking Gear

“Ok what are some hints and tips that make winter backpacking more fun?”

hmmm....chemical heaters, bag of sausage and cheese stuffed down my shirt to keep it from freezing. Sometimes put my camelbak in there too.”

“Wet Boot Dryer - Boil water & put it your Nalgene Bottle. Place bottle in boot. Boil more water and pour into your MSR Dromadery (sp) container. Drape over the front of your boot. This should unfreeze the boot and get the moisture out in 15-30 minutes.”

layers. just make sure you dont melt your bottle because you left it near the fire for to long..boot warmers in your boots at night. feels very comfy in the chilly morning,”

“Fleece pants for a top layer, down booties and a balaclave to keep the neck and cheeks from turning pink.”

frozen lunch is not good and in between shirt layers is easiest.”

“* layering everything (incl hats and gloves)
* Putting some electrolyte drink mix in the water bottle to lower the freezing point.
* Steal Twiggy's booze when you get a chance.
* High fat snacks (not just sausage and cheese, nuts - esp macadamias).
* Can take frozen foods (but watch water weight).
* Don't ferget gaiters.
* Dry backups for everything that touches your skin (including glove liners).
* If you aren't staying in a cabin that can be heated, travel with someone who you enjoy holding on to.”

curious... is there any kind of "learning curve" or do you just strap them on and start walking. Like, I know with x-country skis, you need a little practice.”

“Prolly can't do anything in Jan, I'm trying my best to get in on the Savage Gulf trip. Maybe in Feb I can pull off a long weekend somewhere cold and white.”

“Winter nights are long so consider bringing a book or something to keep amused. If you're hiking with others you can sit outside around a fire, but if the weather is bad sometimes you can't and then the night's really long.”

Just strap em on and walk. It's that easy. The learning curve is practicing getting them off and on with gloves on.

Lt - 1 thing that makes winter packing fun for me is getting warm at camp and STAYING warm. If you can't stay warm in camp, then it's a long long night in the tent. I solo'd this past weekend and made the most of it. I got a nice fire going, put down some tyvek, my sleeping pad, got my camp chair out, and slid halfway into my sleeping bag. A nice hot meal, some good merlot, and a good book made this a very pleasant evening.”
